Chip's Tips: Tips For Songwriters And Life, by Chip Hardy

"Chip's Tips" is a book comprised of a series of individual articles written to aid aspiring songwriters in learning the craft of songwriting. Chip Hardy, the book's author, lives in Nashville, TN and has experienced the joys and successes, as well as the bitter disappointments, of a professional songwriting career. This book is an attempt to focus non-professional songwriters on the positive side of the creative process and to look on their talents as what they are--gifts! Whether anyone who reads this book is ever successful as a songwriter, or in any other capacity in the music industry, is not the goal of the author. "Chip's Tips" is, hopefully, a reminder that we all have unique talents and that we are all here to make a difference in this world. Chip's positive and uplifting attitude and writing style become much more than "tips for songwriters"--they are "tips for life"! "Chip's Tips" is a must read for songwriters at any level but the philosophy and advice in this book make it enjoyable and helpful for almost anyone in any profession. It's an "easy read" so take a little time to relax and be prepared to "smile"!

About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR......... Chip Hardy is an ol' veteran of the Nashville music business...."35+ years!!!." His career has ranged from songwriter, to producer, to A&R at a major record label, to working with songwriters in music publishing. He was born and raised in a small town in Western Kansas "out in the middle of nowhere". His mother is an accomplished keyboard player and his dad loved to sing. At the age of 4 Chip was spinning old 78 rpm records of Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Doris Day and Hank Williams, Sr. Around age 7 his mother taught him the basic chords on ukulele and he began playing and singing for various school and community events. At 12 he took up guitar and began writing songs. Throughout his high school years Chip played in a Pop-Rock cover band that covered Western Kansas, the Oklahoma panhandle, the Texas panhandle, parts of Eastern Colorado and Western Nebraska. He attended college at Fort Hays State University and was a music education major until his senior year. "I just wanted out" was his quote about college "because I knew I wanted to go to Nashville and write songs." As a songwriter Chip's songs have been recorded by Dionne Warwick, Dean Martin, Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride and The Whites. His production credits include Loretta Lynn, Dann Rogers, The Vega Bros., Rick & Janis Carnes and Joe Barnhill while being assistant to the producer on projects by George Strait, Reba McEntire, Waylon Jennings, The Oak Ridge Boys, Mac Davis, Roger Miller, Glen Campbell, Barbara Mandrell and numerous others. He was also in charge of artist development for MCA Records. During his publisher career Chip recorded over 1,200 song demos for Hamstein Music including the demos for "Just To See You Smile" by Tim McGraw and "I'll Think Of A Reason Later", the first hit by Lee Ann Womack. He also helped develop Jerrod Neimann while running Marathon Key Music Publishing Company which was a joint venture between Billy Joe Walker, Jr. and Warner Chappell Music. Currently Chip is producing indie projects and songwriter demos at THE 515 Studio in the Berry Hill section of Nashville......."and loving every minute of it!!!"

"Chip's Tips" A Must Read
By Avrim Topel, Author of GREEN BEGINNINGS: The Story of How We Built Our Green & Sustainable Home
I'm a songwriting book junkie. I read them all. And then, down the road, when I get stuck or frustrated, I read the good ones again. And finally, when I am at the point where I'm banging my head against the wall, I go back again and actually perform the "practice exercises" that the authors had suggested in the first place. Some of us are slower than others.

In my quest for craft, of the 20-30 some books I have read on the subject, I have found that the most meaningful lessons have come from the teachers who share their real-life experience from the heart and in open and honest ways.
Jason Blume does this.
Robyn Frederick does too.
And Chip Hardy absolutely nails it.

"Chip's Tips" are a series of brief but powerful songwriting essays that transcend the academics of song craft. The essays are like personal conversations between the reader and a professional songwriter and industry veteran mentor who speaks from the heart, passing along his most valuable "tips" on topics that range from song structure and song titles to spiritual survival in an industry that says "No" more than a Republican senate.

Real information passed along by someone who wants you to get it. Whether Chip is defining what a hook is, or outlining a final check-list to make sure your song is really ready to have a demo made, or even explaining how to react to song critiques, readers can feel his strong desire for them to succeed. It amazed me at how much real information has been condensed into this easy to navigate little book.

But "Chip's Tips" goes beyond revealing the most obvious aspects of song craft. A separate section of the book addresses the soul and spirit of the songwriter. Why do you want to be a songwriter... why do you write songs? How do you define success?
How can a songwriter find contentment in such a crazy industry and world? Well, it's obvious that Chip Hardy has met and worked with an awful lot of songwriters and industry professionals over the past 35 years who have struggled with these and similar situations and demons, and it was heartwarming for this songwriter to read how others have emotionally navigated thru the tides.

Speaking as one who has repeatedly studied the best songwriting books from Anderson to Zollo, I am delighted to tell readers that this is an amazing and valuable guide and roadmap delivered from the heart by an industry veteran who understands the concept that "you have to give it away to keep it".

Finally, if the above review isn't enough to urge you to read "Chip's Tips", Chip Hardy has included a special bonus. Unique to other songwriting books (at least that I can remember), Chip consistently reminds us that the whole idea behind songwriting is to have fun, and shares ways for we as songwriters to remain grateful for the gift that we have been blessed with. And that's a beautiful thing.

Easy, Informative Read
By Betty J. Holt
Written in short chapters on various subjects, this book gives a glimpse of the music business by a music veteran. I found it helpful. Chip has a great recording studio in Nashville that is highly professional. He knows the business of songwriting inside and out.

Real life advice from one smart guy!
By David Simmons
Chip does a great job putting his philosophy into practical, real world advice for aspiring song writers. I have been lucky enough to meet Chip and do some with him and he is one of the nicest people in Nashville! DS

Beauty and the Beast (Adult Fairy Tales Book 1), by Nicole Dreadful

While visiting her family, Beauty narrowly avoids a drunken kiss during her sister's wedding festivities. Back in the Beast's manor, though, she catches a glimpse of her brother and his lover through a magic mirror, and begins to wonder what it would be like to be kissed and caressed...

In this erotic retelling of the classic fairy tale, Beauty discovers her own sexuality and learns to share it with the Beast. While the Beast lingers on the border between animal and man, he relies on Beauty's love to help him come to terms with himself. If you’re over 18 and looking for a character driven, sexy fairy tale with paranormal overtones, this novelette is for you.

“Now I can read and reread the mommy version while my kid watches the animated version over and over and over and…” –a mother refilling her glass with “grownup juice”

“Quirky humor and interesting language add freshness to this retelling.” –an entertained beta reader

“When are we going to start researching the next one?” – the author’s husband

About the author
Nicole Dreadful grew up reading huge tomes of fairy and folk tale collections, not all of which had been edited for children. In these stories, princes and rescued maidens slept with a sword between them in the bed to ensure chastity, Sleeping Beauty gave birth to twins before she woke, and a witch’s beautiful daughters had tooth-filled vaginas. Now she is returning to fairy tales and exploring their sexual aspects.

Reall good and more than just a romance
By Christine N. Ethier
I have to admit that this isn't the time of book I would normally pick up. I also don't know how it compares to other Erotica titles considering that I don't read very much erotica. I found the sex scenes to be far better than what appears in the Anita Blake series and more on par with Jacqueline Carey's historical fantasy, just without the bondage bit.

I was very surprised by this book, I must admit. It wasn't at all which I thought it would be (some weird beastial sex mash up thing. I actually was cringing when I "brought it. But I thought, it's free so no risk). The story, however, is a nice retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story, admitting with a few sex scenes between people who actually love each other.

What I really like is the fact that Nicole Dreadful really knows her tale. If you have read the various French versions, you will see them reflected here, as well as hints of McKinley and Disney. Dreadful updates the tale - the family is close and the sister not evil - but she also deals with what critics believe the original tale to be about. The theory is that the original story was about finding happiness or lessening fear on behalf of the women who were facing arranged marriages. That it is, in part, leaving one family and joining another, of losing fear of sex. This idea of the fear of sex is what Dreadful focuses on and what makes this short story rise above the all too common romance retellings. What Dreadful explores is coming to terms not all with sexuality in general, but your own. I got this for free, but for intended to buy the next in the series. Very good.

Bad....
By Jennifer Campbell
This pales in comparison to any other rendition I have read thus far (excluding the version I just rated for those following my progress).

The characters are flat, the sex isn't all it's cracked up to be, and the plot was practically butchered.

The story plot mostly runs parallel to Robin McKinley's "Beauty" for the first 70%, though with a few changes here and there. Time flew quickly, so one chapter lasts around a week, and then the time flies by months a time, next thing you know, it's been a year.

There was no incentive for Beauty to come back when she leaves the first time, but she does and starts picturing the Beast kissing her?

In the opening, you find out Beauty is an illegitimate child born of a mistress, but that fact is ignored the rest of the novel.

It didn't hold together, is what I'm saying....

Disappointed
By LAL
I like the fairy tale version of Beauty and the Beast, so I downloaded this to get a different spin. Since I found it in the romance section, I figured it would be an erotic spin, but it didn't quite make it there. If you're going to put an adult spin on a timeless story, it seems to me the characters of that story need to act like adults. The whole time I was reading it, I felt as if Beauty was a small child, though an age was never given. And I can't figure out why the whole Elliot thing was even written. I guess it was just confusing for me more than anything else.

Georgia Nicolson has started dating the Sex God (aka Robbie). So life should be perfect . . . except in Georgia's life, nothing is ever perfect. Her cat, Angus (the size of a small Labrador), is terrorizing the neighborhood. Her sister, Libby (who is slightly mad), hides her pooey knickers at the bottom of Georgia's bed.

Then the Sex God breaks it off because she's too young. It's time for a plan. It's time for a Red Herring. It's time for Georgia to become a "heartless boy magnet!"

Amazon.com Review
Fourteen-year-old Georgia Nicolson is back in British author Louise Rennison's irreverent, laugh-out-loud sequel to the Michael L. Printz Honor Book Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging. Written in diary form, these truly hilarious books chronicle the often minute-by-minute, very dramatic, and significant flip-flops of a teenager's psyche.

7:18 p.m.
My eyes are all swollen up like mice eyes from crying. Even my nose is swollen. It's not small at the best of times, but now it looks like I've got three cheeks. Marvelous. Thank you, God.

9:00 p.m.
I'll never get over this.

9:10 p.m.
Time goes very slowly when you're suicidal.

What tragedy has her so distraught? Her parents have told her she's moving to New Zealand just when she's managed to snog (kiss--look it up in the glossary) the SG (Sex God, a.k.a Robbie). This is of course not the only source of drama in Georgia's eventful life. Her half Scottish wildcat, Angus, who is the size of a small Labrador, herds the poodles next door and terrorizes the neighborhood. Her little sister, Libby, who is slightly mad, stores her "pooey knickers" and her scuba-diving Barbie doll in Georgia's bed. Her mother (from whom she inherited her orangutan eyebrow gene and possibly her "gigantic basoomas") is clearly inhabiting Earth solely to make her life miserable, and even her best friend Jas is "half girl, half turnip."

Despite the fact that she's spared from going to "Kiwi-a-gogo land," things don't get much better for Georgia. She's suspended for a childish prank right before her dad returns from New Zealand, she falls in love with the SG who dumps her for being too young, and Dave, the "red-herring" boyfriend she's using to make the SG jealous calls her a "heartless whatsit." And, she continues, "the spot on my bum is probably a boil. I wonder what Buddha would do now?" Rennison's comedic timing is brilliant. Adolescent angst ("I hope I am not driven to the brink of madness by grief") vanishes less than an hour later ("Angus can fetch sticks!!!") and sometimes even sooner. (Warning: Do not read this book while riding a train or bus unless you don't care what people think of intermittent explosive laughter. Seriously.) (Ages 12 and older) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly
"Georgia Nicolson's laugh-a-minute narration picks up right where it left off in Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging," said PW in a starred review. "Fans will not be disappointed." Ages 10-up. (May)

From School Library Journal

Gr 7-9-This sequel to Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging (HarperCollins, 2000) hilariously captures the obsessions and lifestyle of a 14-year-old. Georgia has a mad crush on 17-year-old Robbie, the SG, Sex God, and the story turns on her moment-by-moment fantasies about him and how she might snare him. The narrative unfolds in diary form, in which she reveals the nuances of her daily dramas at school, at home with her mother and younger sister, with her best friend, and with her surrogate boyfriend. Set in England, Georgia's story gathers humor from her quirky use of language and English slang. In fact, readers can refer to the glossary to check on the meanings of words like "snogging" (kissing), "gob" (mouth), and "lippy" (lipstick). On the Bright Side is a funny romp through the intricacies of one especially explosive period of growing up and will be devoured by girls on the brink of becoming teenagers and those who are living in the thick of it now.-Mara Bright, Mark's Meadow School, Amherst, MA

A witty, fun read
By Amanda Smith
I decided to re-read this series just for fun, for a light quick read on breaks at work and so on. I laughed out loud all over again, it's nice to revisit Georgia and her crazy life, to take a peek into the wacky and self-absorbed mind of a teenager and remember what it was like when boys and friends and lip gloss were top priorities in life. 'On the Bright Side...' had always been one of my favourites, and probably one of the funniest out of all the books. Would definitely recommend.

The Sex God has landed...
By Susan S. Galligan
The Sex God has landed...

That is true in this book. This realistic fiction will take you inside Georgia's emotions while you learn about boyfriends and friendship.

Georgia and her best friend Jas getting in fights and don't talk to each other. Georgia tries to get back together with Robbie who she calls the Sex God. Teenage life takes over this book with its funniness and sadness.

There are five books to this series and counting: Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging, Knocked Out by My Nunga-Nungas, Dancing in My Nuddy-Pants, and Away Laughing on a Fast Camel. Her witty comments and diary-formatted book make this book the greatest!

I would say teenage girls would love this book most. But if you're older or younger and want to read it be my guest because I think that you would love it too!!!!

Not just for teens!
By J. Nichols
Even as a 40+ year old, I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging. I read the first before placing it in a middle school library and knew right away it would be a hit with the teen crowd, but I also recommended it to several adults. As soon as I knew the next installment was available, I ordered it immediately. The sequel manages to maintain the originality and charm of the first. Georgia's quite a girl--a typical teen, but with a dry sense of humor and an ability to poke fun at herself. The supporting cast returns in full force--Robbie,AKA the Sex God, her friends, family, and of course, Angus who, in this book, suffers along with Georgia through the throes of love. Just as in the first, I found myself laughing out loud, finally giving way to tears. All in all, this is a delightful book that can be enjoyed, certainly by its' intended teen audience, but also by a slightly older crowd.

The Meaning of Freedom: And Other Difficult Dialogues (City Lights Open Media), by Angela Y. Davis

What is the meaning of freedom? Angela Y. Davis' life and work have been dedicated to examining this fundamental question and to ending all forms of oppression that deny people their political, cultural, and sexual freedom. In this collection of twelve searing, previously unpublished speeches, Davis confronts the interconnected issues of power, race, gender, class, incarceration, conservatism, and the ongoing need for social change in the United States. With her characteristic brilliance, historical insight, and penetrating analysis, Davis addresses examples of institutional injustice and explores the radical notion of freedom as a collective striving for real democracy - not something granted or guaranteed through laws, proclamations, or policies, but something that grows from a participatory social process that demands new ways of thinking and being. "The speeches gathered together here are timely and timeless," writes Robin D.G. Kelley in the foreword, "they embody Angela Davis' uniquely radical vision of the society we need to build, and the path to get there."

The Meaning of Freedom articulates a bold vision of the society we need to build and the path to get there. This is her only book of speeches.

"Davis' arguments for justice are formidable. . . . The power of her historical insights and the sweetness of her dream cannot be denied."—The New York Times

"One of America's last truly fearless public intellectuals." —Cynthia McKinney, former US Congresswoman

"Angela Davis offers a cartography of engagement in oppositional social movements and unwavering commitment to justice." —Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Women's Studies, Hamilton College

"Angela Davis deserves credit, not just for the dignity and courage with which she has lived her life, but also for raising important critiques of a for-profit penitentiary system decades before those arguments gained purchase in the mainstream." —Thomas Chatterton Williams, SFGate

"Angela Davis's revolutionary spirit is still strong. Still with us, thank goodness!"
—Virginian-Pilot

"Long before 'race/gender' became the obligatory injunction it is now, Angela Davis was developing an analytical framework that brought all of these factors into play. For readers who only see Angela Davis as a public icon . . . meet the real Angela Davis: perhaps the leading public intellectual of our era." —Robin D. G. Kelley author of Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original

"There was a time in America when to call a person an 'abolitionist' was the ultimate epithet. It evoked scorn in the North and outrage in the South. Yet they were the harbingers of things to come. They were on the right side of history. Prof. Angela Y. Davis stands in that proud, radical tradition." —Mumia Abu-Jamal, author of Jailhouse Lawyers: Prisoners Defending Prisoners v. the U.S.A.

"Behold the heart and mind of Angela Davis, open, relentless, and on time!" —June Jordan

"Political activist, scholar, and author Angela Davis confronts the interconnected issues of power, race, gender, class, incarceration, conservatism, and the ongoing need for social change in the U.S. in her book, The Meaning of Freedom: And Other Difficult Dialogues." —Travis Smiley Radio

From Booklist
Davis, a political progressive icon of the 1960s, tackles the concept and application of freedom in the context of the twenty-first century. She focuses on the growth of the prison industry nationally and internationally, reflecting on forces of capitalism that undercut human freedom. Challenging the reader to conceive of a world without prisons, Davis champions a concept of prison abolition. Hers is not a utopian perspective but one based on historical analysis of how prisons evolved as an alternative to punishment by death and as a continuation of post-slavery racial control. Davis examines the connection of poor education to low employment for American minorities, particularly blacks, making them easy targets for the prison stampede. She also explores the forces of capitalism in relation to developing nations, producing economic instability that leads to mass immigration and another population vulnerable to incarceration. This book is a collection of Davis’ lectures from 1994 through 2009, interweaving themes of freedom and bias based on race, gender, and sexual orientation. Davis is at her best linking these perceptively separate segments into a broader concept of freedom across all the lines that separate us. --Vernon Ford

Review

"This document of contemporary thought by a major world-historical figure, Davis' first full-length book in almost a decade, makes it timelessly clear that while no freedom fight will ever be easy—'We can’t rely on simple categories'—every real triumph, however small and short-lived, will always be worth it." -- Todd Steven Burroughs, Ebony.com

"The 12 speeches delivered between 1994 and 2009, and collected here for the first time, provide as good an entry point as any into the radical life and ideas of the political activist and thinker Angela Davis." -- San Francisco Chronicle

"In this collection of 12 previously unpublished speeches, the longtime activist asks readers to imagine a social landscape devoid of institutional and cultural injustice. Freedom is a process of becoming, she asserts; it can't be fully realized without collective participation by a demanding society."--Ms. Magazine

"Angela Y. Davis proves that it's still possible to find a new, refreshing way to discuss race, gender, class, and sexuality. In this heartfelt examination through previously unpublished speeches, Davis discusses these issues with simple language and challenges us to think about how feminism and racism relate to our everyday lives."--Bust Magazine

"This book is a collection of Davis’ lectures from 1994 through 2009, interweaving themes of freedom and bias based on race, gender, and sexual orientation. Davis is at her best linking these perceptively separate segments into a broader concept of freedom across all the lines that separate us."--Booklist

"As always, Davis is particularly concerned with the prison-industrial complex, yet her thoughts on marriage equality, immigration and globalization are just as thought-provoking." -- San Jose Mercury News

"Angela Davis has devoted her career to this fundamental question of freedom, and its seemingly inherent other, oppression. The need for social change in America is great, but constantly thwarted by institutional injustice. Davis is calling for real democracy, which comes not from any law or proclamation, but by participatory social process."--Alexis Coe, SF Weekly

"Davis is careful to bring current, pressing, and local issues into each of her speeches. The same undergirding of what the Combahee River Collective called 'interlocking' oppressions organizes not only her speeches but also her responses to audience members included in the book, providing some of the richest moments in the collection." —Alexis Pauline Gumbs Make/Shift Magazine

Food For Thought:
By BlackJack21
Angela Davis' book "The Meaning of Freedom" is a collection of speeches/jeremiads that span the last twenty years of her career as a leftwing civil rights activist. The book is compelling, intellectually provocative, and emphatically charged insofar as social injustice is concerned.

Davis is fearless when it comes to raising the issue of civil rights for all people of different races, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and let's not forget felons. Davis believes the American dream should be a reality that everyone should have access to. Unfortunately, they don't.

In most States, the LGBT community still doesn't have the legal right to marriage. Also, felons are relegated to second class status for the rest of their lives, permanently losing the right to vote, all the while, legally being denied work and not being able to apply for social programs in order to get back on their feet. The Clinton Crime Bill is a prime example of this apartheid behavior toward felons in the United States. As a matter of fact "racism plays a major role in determining who is subject to state punishment and who is not!" The reasons why are staggering as Davis points out during the 2000 election in Florida. Overall, 950,000 former felons reside there and if they were given the right to vote, its plain to see that Al Gore would have been elected president of the United States. The real objective insofar as eradicating the civil rights of the incarcerated is to maintain a form of hegemonic despotism in the auspices of a pseudo-democracy, which the Ultra-Right would control.

"The Meaning of Freedom" as a whole is a relevant book to read considering the Supreme Court ruled that section V of the Voting Rights Act is unconstitutional, which is now leading to the disenfranchisement of minority voters across the country. North Carolina is leading the charges into this reactionary recidivism, a form of constitutional malfeasance.
The Trayvon Martin case is another prime example of apartheid in the U.S. with the Stand Your Ground Laws that are being promoted throughout the country and the fact that George Zimmerman was allowed to get away with murder has created a disquieting situation and has set American race relations back nearly sixty years.

Davis' main argument is that the system is stacked in favor of the Neoliberals in power and it is up to the American people to find common ground in order to fix this insalubrious situation that has metastasized into an unconstitutional draconian quagmire that can't remain upright for long. Sooner or later our system of governance will discombobulate if we don't recognize the rights of all people around the world, and that this country needs socialistic programs in place in order to allow its people a chance to achieve the American dream.

Davis also points out, "In today's era of Global capitalism, resistance to racism can only be effective if it is anchored in global communities of struggle. Our challenge today is to build secure bridges that link anti-racist movements, prison abolitionist campaigns, and immigrant rights movements."

Believe me when I tell you, you won't agree with everything she says in this series of speeches. Angela Davis is as far left as it gets and many of her ideas seem pragmatic at first glance. Whether or not her ideas are viable is left up to the reader.
As for me, I believe most of her ideas are the only solution to today's problems and concerns.

Other books that correlate to this one are as follows:

Al Gore: "The Assault on Reason"
