About the Author

Dr George C. McGavin is the Assistant Curator of the Entomological Collections in the Oxford University Museum, one of the worlds' largest insect collections. He is also Lecturer in Biological and Human Sciences at Jesus College, Oxford and a member of the Expedition Council and Advisory Committee of the Oxford University Exploration Club. In addition to scientific papers, he has written many books on bugs and other insects for adults and children and is also known on radio and television. He eats insects regularly and currently has three insect species named in his honour. Illustrations by Richard Lewington, highly-respected and renowned insect artist

Essential Entomology,

This text is an excellent assembly of the fundamentals of entomology and a worthy contribution to the field. However, it is no Tripplehorn, the truly essential introductory entomology text. It lacks an identification key, but provides a wealthh of order-level introductory information. This book would serve as a good supplemental text. A nice addition to a personal entomology library.

Very good basic introduction to identifying insects

This is a very good practical introduction to the major orders of insects, for people who don't have a strong background in advanced biology and don't want one. It does not bog down on extensive keys within the orders, just gives key details about each order.

I am volunteering in a university insect collection lab, and this book gives me the information I most need without bogging down in a lot of information I don't need. It is however, a better resource for someone just learning to do insect identification in a university lab, than for instance the Peterson bug guides, which I found to be the next best option.

I showed this book to the professor who runs the insect collection, and he said this is a good book. He said that if all of his volunteers knew the contents of this book, he would be very happy.

Misses what is central to worship

This book was written to provide answers about God's plan for worship, what worship is, and how to go about worshipping in a Biblical manner.

The author does a very good job of presenting worship practices from the Bible in an easy-to-read style. He takes the reader through both the Old and New Testaments as he examines recorded examples of worship.

While I feel that there is quite a bit of good information to be taken from this book, the overall tone of the author was a bit off-putting to me personally. The writing seemed a bit contrived, as he tried (too hard in my opinion) to speak in a familiar tone, often sounding as if he were explaining his ideas to a small child. He also used many Wikipedia citations, which caused me to question the depth of his research.

Also, it seemed to me that much of the same information presented in this book could be found simply by reading the Bible on one's own.

While the author did stress the importance of obedience as the beginning of true worship, I felt he often confused praising God with worshiping Him. Praise certainly has its place in worship, but the words are not entirely interchangeable.

Sacrifice was a part of worship in the Old Testament, and the sacrifice of Christ was the main focus of worship found in the New Testament. Sacrifice was very seldom mentioned in this book, which I felt constituted quite a large oversight. Songs of praise, private prayer time... these things have their place in our times of worship, but they are not in and of themselves worship. The apostle Paul tells us,

"Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship." - Romans 12:1 (NAB)

All in all this book was easy to read and did a good job of presenting stories of the Bible pertaining to worship. However, I felt that a crucial element was missing - a look at how offering our lives as a sacrifice to God, day in and day out - in everything we do - is at the very core of worshipping Biblically.

Often speculative and sometimes countradictory

Frankly, your time would be better spent in searching the Bible for what it says on worship rather than in reading this book. I've done such a study, and it profoundly changed my life.

My first problem is that Whaley rarely pointed out Scriptures where God tells us how He wants to be worshiped--and there are plenty of them. After all, don't we want to know what GOD wants?

Instead, much of "Called to Worship" was the author's paraphrase of a Bible story (adding in motives that are not in the Bible and I often didn't think correct) with a small section at the end drawing lessons that he felt that Adam & Eve, Cain and Abel, Abram, Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Samuel, Saul, David, Solomon, Elijah, Jehoshaphat, and Job demonstrated about worship.

He asks the reader to trust his often very speculative take on how he thinks God wants to be worshiped instead of looking for what God stated on the subject. (For example, the Garden of Eden supposedly demonstrates that perfect worship is that which is done all alone and totally secluded from all distractions.)

Another thing that distressed me were statements Whaley made in chapters 2 and 3 which directly contradict Scripture. For example, his statements strongly imply he thinks God has no control over Satan and that God couldn't protect Adam and Eve from Satan's influence any more than a father can protect his son from hearing a man cussing in public. He also says that Satan always had dominion over the earth (rather than Adam), that Satan existed "before Creation" (so he isn't created?), that suffering and the curse on the earth came from Satan's actions (instead of Adam's), that all of the resulting suffering was outside God's plan and completely harmful (he needs to read "If God Is Good" by Randy Alcorn). And, finally, that God lost to Satan--not the war in heaven, but the war on earth.

The author made some statements throughout the book that he later contradicted with a verse he quoted or a statement he made, and I sometimes was unsure just what he believed. I was very concerned about what someone not firm in Bible knowledge would think he was saying. (And if you're familiar with the Bible, you won't learn anything new about worship from this book.)

The later sections of "Called to Worship" looked at books of the Bible (like Psalms, Proverbs, the epistles, etc.) and were better because the author stuck with actual Scripture. The only two chapters of this book that I felt were good were those studying how Jesus worshiped--Jesus is both God and the perfect worshiper so He is a good example.

The book was written in a very conversational style and was like a bunch of mini-sermons loosely focused on worship. While I did agree with some of the points he made, it was because I knew of verses that specifically state the point rather than because of the example he gave.

So, as I said above, your time would be better spent in searching the Bible for what it says on worship rather than in reading this book.

Reader stay a moment! A word before you read the following pages, because you-if you are not an octogenerian-never heard John Jasper in his pulpit.

No doubt, you have heard about him, and particularly the most celebrated of his sermons, but the chances are you never read a line that he "preached", and yet his reputation was as wide as that of the late "Justice John" (The Virginia Judge) who followed Jasper by nearly a generation.

Jasper, like most celebrities, was one of a class without successors, excpet the innumerable Negro ministers tried without success to affect his ways. Raised in bondage during the ante bellum days, unlettered and ungrammatical, the son of Africa never lost-not to his dying day-the manners and tastes of the old South.

On the pulpit, the Reverend gave an exhibition in a torrent of language that has never been equalled. His gestures were beyond description while circling the pulpit-laughing, singing, shouting and crying. In spite of these irreverent actions, he was puring out to a spellbound congregation a red hot sermon, full of love, tenderness, tears and bitterness. Jasper embodied the hearts, the minds and the emotions of those who heard him but once. And thus, in later life, he became a sensation as a national lecturer.

His celebrated sermon "De Sun Do Move" was a scientific absurdity, but Jasper summoned his Bible as witness that the earth was flat and that the sun rotated. To drive home his point and to substantiate his sermon he ransacked the Good Book, plucking passages as he found them, and literally proved his position. His love of the Bible, his pure honesty, his devout faith and unyielding courage drew to him the respect and admiration of thousands. Few ever left the pews of the Sixth Mount Zion Church in Richmind who were not wholly or partially convinced-even the skeptics-that perhaps "Reverend Jasper had something."

And the Reverend did "have something"-even if in a modest degree that something is now perpetuated in book form-the most popular of his sermons "De Sun Do Move."

About the Author
John J. Jasper was born a slave on July 4, 1812 on Peachy Plantation in Fluvanna County, Virginia, the yougest of 24 children. His father, a preacher had prophesied that his last child would become a great minister. Jasper was converted to Christianity and secretly learned to read. He studied the Bible and was soon preaching the Sciptures. In 1867 Jasper joined 10 friends to create the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church. Reverend Jasper preached De Sun Do Move more than 250 times, including one before the Virginia General Assembly. It is known that Jasper married four times and fathered at least seven children with his second wife. He sadly passed away on March 28, 1901, at age 89.

High Adventure

Sky Pirates might have been inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars, but it's been seriously remixed: seasoned with portions of weird science, weirder sorcery and a healthy measure of madness. William King has created an anti-hero hauling a heavy burden through a strange and imaginative world full of implied spaces that hint at a wealth of characters just off stage and adventures yet to be explored.
Not only do I hope for sequels, this story cries out for a graphic novel adaptation. The rich imagery King provides could easily be worth a thousand pictures. It's top flight fantasy adventure.

Lovely one-chapter-a-day reads!

It serves perfectly well for my style of reading. Each day I come back for more and love it. I'm not sure if you could like it if you're looking for something clasicall-ish, but if you're in for some easy to read fantasy action with futuristic science and magick with swords and soul and more willing to enjoy than analyze, you can hardly go wrong with this not-too-complex gem!

I downloaded Sky Pirates for free a while ago and found it to be an exciting adventure. William King creates a marvelous, magical world filled with interesting characters and you get a true sense of wonder as you read this exciting, fantastic novel. I highly recommend it to people of all ages.
