Very entertaining Roman thriller
By Nick Brett
The second in this new Roman series sits within a pretty crowded market and some very well-known authors. I enjoyed the first book and this follow up is just as good.

Young and slightly naive Cassius Corbulo is an Imperial agent, not by choice, more by circumstance. He is smart but no great sword fighter and in many situations lacks confidence or gravitas which does make a refreshing change. In this book he continues to be aided by his servant Sumo (and again the author avoids the trap of them treating each-other as equals) and a taciturn ex Gladiator who is along as a bodyguard. The three of them are on the trail of some stolen treasure and an Imperial Banner that must be recovered.

So we share the adventures of our trio as they doggedly follow the trail of theft, murder and treachery.

It works on a number of levels as the characters have depth and, especially in the case of Cassius, have their flaws that they manage through. In addition the dynamics between the main three characters is always entertaining and this helpd make this a fun and entertaining romp.

Not what I expected, but a great read!
By David
They say not to judge a book by its cover. This is not a sword and glory novel, it is more along the lines of espionage or mystery and it really works well. In this second of the series we see the main protagonist Cassius fleshed out and while not exactly James Bond of the Legionary set, it still had me engrossed throughout. Brown also introduces another character, the bodyguard former gladiator who works well in the tale. The ancient city of Antioch is brought to life and could almost be considered a main character too as it is richly woven into the second half of the book. Overall an enjoyable, comfortable way to spend some hours being transported back in time... Can't wait to dive into the next in the series, The Far Shore, as soon as I click Send!

A new Roman series that's thoroughly entertaining
By Lucinda
This exciting new series stands-out within a highly competitive, crowded genre alongside authors such as Bernard Cornwell, Simon Scarrow and Conn Iggulden to name but a few. Unlike the merciless warrior `hero' figure of Cassius in the majority of fiction, here the author portrays this icon in a new light and altogether different angle. The slant taken on the Roman fighter is one of secret service as a spy; an entirely original concept that's unexpected and intriguing. This detective type story takes you on a thrilling adventure with epic battles and treasure hunts, reminiscent of "The Eagle" versus a contemporary crime saga! Full of twists & turns in the plot, shocking secrets and unforeseen unfolding events...I can predict this series becoming something of a sensation.

It's ultimately the characters that make this gripping tale so fascinating to read and colourful - from Cassius' servant Simo, his bodyguard Indavara and the ex-gladiator. This tantalizing trio on the trail for the Imperial banner were full of depth, and I loved their interaction amongst themselves throughout the book. Murder and treachery within an authentic, atmospheric setting makes this historical novel a winner in my mind and a sure-fire success as a sequel! Although this is part of a series it is also a book that likewise can be read as a `stand alone' novel.

Book 2 in the Agent of Rome series is a spectacular story and one that I would highly recommend to fans of this genre, as something new and highly imaginative. Rich backdrops and likeable characters make this unusual tale something truly unforgettable. I am so pleased to have won a copy of Nick Brown's book {through a GoodReads, first-read giveaway} and I look forward to reading and discovering more of his work.

Consistently Good.
By Axel
Captain America Lives Omnibus is the third omnibus collecting the stellar run of Ed Brubaker on Captain America and is well worth the money and investment of time. Picking off right where the previous omnibus ended, the initial issues here involve an excellent story about Bucky initially facing Batrock the Leaper followed by a confrontation with a ghost from Bucky Cap's past. The important thing to note about Brubaker's run on Cap is that the book is spy intrigue disguised as normal superhero fare, and Brubaker continues that trend here to great effect. The confrontation between Bucky and his old enemy adds further depth to the character and fleshes out his background somewhat, while also underscoring that Bucky is slightly more an underdog in the role of Cap than Steve, a fact which makes the character that much more interesting to the reader. Following this, are several "anniversary" type stories by Brubaker and other creators which alternate between pedestrian, (Brubaker) slightly maudlin (Roger Stern), and over-clever for its own good (Mark Waid.)

The story that follows however, is the much anticipated and discussed Captain America Reborn, and while I was initially concerned that the actual series could never actually live up to the excitement, Reborn proved an entertaining if also imperfect vehicle for the return of Steve Rogers. Although a generally lyrical story which manages to move on at reasonably brisk clip, Reborn suffers from two major problems. First, is that Steve's precise plight is never actually explained or directly addressed in the pages of the series - we understand that he appears to be jumping around in time in his own body, reliving previous experiences, but the reasons for this are only vaguely addressed. We understand that Sharon Carter is somehow a key to the affair, but what exactly happens to Steve's body, what the Skull's real objectives were, and how he managed to achieve those objectives, (beyond using Sharon) are only indirectly touched upon. Such is the state of mainstream comics that even though entire events are orchestrated around a characters apparent demise and return, neither the writer nor editorial powers that be, deem it worth it to provide a compelling and convincing explanation in the narrative itself. It's as if Brubaker realized he didn't really have an explanation for how Steve came back so he decided: Steve died, he was somehow resurrected, he was travelling through time - that's all you need to know, please move on... Never mind that the actual narrative makes little sense or that the explanation for this strains credibility even for comics. The other problem is that the Red Skull's persistence at remaining alive is now bordering on the ridiculous, but more importantly, the final confrontation between Steve and the Skull is somewhat anti-climactic, and a little too neat. Despite a story over five years in the making, all Brubaker can seem to muster when he finally brings Steve back, is a hackneyed confrontation between the characters that is nearly a page for page repeat of Mark Waid's excellent Operation Rebirth, without hitting the same emotional crescendo.

In fact, there's a lot about Cap Reborn that's derivative, but that is less a criticism of Brubaker than it is of Marvel's tendency to re-do successful stories from its characters' pasts. For all this criticism though, the truth is that Reborn is actually a pretty entertaining read, if you ignore the niggling problems, and Brubaker at least must be commended for following through on what seems to have been a reasonably well laid out plan of some sort. The art by Bryan Hitch is astoundingly good as usual, although not his best, as the inks by Butch Guice weighs down the lines a tad too much and muddies panels that could use some negative space every once in a while. With all the detail Hitch tends to include in every panel, heavy inks cause a claustrophobia-like effect on the page that irritates after a while. All the characters in Brubaker's run are effectively utilized and each issue is enjoyable as a solid chapter in its own right, that advances the overall story.

The final stories in this omnibus include one drawn by the legendary Gene Colan, who, despite waning powers, proves that he remains one of the mediums best storytellers.

Despite whatever criticism above, this omnibus is an excellent collection of pretty good stories by Brubaker and the various artists who accompany him on this wonderful journey he's been taking us on since the series began. Captain America under Brubaker has been one of Marvel's most consistently good products and Brubaker is largely to be credited for that, due to his general affection for the character and his intelligent decision to write according to a larger plan. I've removed one star for two minor niggles about the general run of stories contained in this volume, which are also somewhat applicable to previous collections. First, if there's one thing that can be slightly annoying about Captain America, is that it's a series firmly grounded in the past, and therefore, it's nearly impossible to go more than two or three issues of the series without a rehash of Cap's origin or a 're-telling' of a story set during the war.... While I love WW II era stories, their frequency in Captain America series diminishes their uniqueness and I feel they are being over-done. It's time for Marvel to let the character breathe and stretch a bit and think a little more about the future and less about the past so much. The second minor niggle is that the art and coloring in this collection are almost muddy and quite dark in some places - a reflection possibly of the influence of inkers like Butch Guice but also of a general choice of the colorists involved. To some extent, a slightly darker pallet is understandable or even desirable - in a series dedicated to high spy intrigue too many bright super-heroey colors would seem out of place. But you can go too far to the extreme in the other direction, where things get so dark your art gets lost or you can't really tell what's going on from panel to panel. Comics are a visual medium, and all the style or art direction in the world mean nothing if you can't literally see your story unfold. It's a problem especially acute in the issue drawn by Colan, and it was such a factor there that it actually proved distracting to me and lessened my enjoyment of the story.

Other than those two minor things, this Omnibus is a must own for Cap fans and an essential continuation to one of the most fascinating runs in modern comics. My highest recommendation.

Maybe a mediocre omnibus by Brubaker, but still a great omnibus by marvel standards.
By LCWainwright
Good but not as great as the previous two installments. Phenomenal art with great bonus content. I thought the story line was somewhat lacking in some areas so thats why I gave it four stars. The omnibus itself is solid quality, what you would expect from marvel's omnibuses: sewn binding with a high quality cover. Of all my omnibuses this one is the thinnest, but overall I would say definitely worth the price, even a mediocre brubaker omnibus is still a great marvel omnibus.

About the Author
Jerry H. Bentley is professor of history at the University of Hawai`i and editor of the Journal of World History. His research on the religious, moral, and political writings of Renaissance humanists led to the publication of Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament Scholarship in the Renaissance (Princeton, 1983) and Politics and Culture in Renaissance Naples (Princeton, 1987). More recently, his research has concentrated on global history and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction. His book Old World Encounters: Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (New York, 1993) examines processes of cultural exchange and religious conversion before the modern era, and his pamphlet Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (Washington, D.C., 1996) discusses the historiography of world history. His current interests include processes of cross-cultural interaction and cultural exchanges in modern times.

Herbert F. Ziegler is an associate professor of history at the University of Hawai'i. He has taught courses on world history for the last 19 years and is currently the director of the world history program at the University of Hawai'i. For several years, he also served as the book review editor of the 'Journal of World History'. His interest in twentieth-century European social and political history led to the publication of 'Nazi Germany's New Aristocracy (1990)'. He is at present working on a study that explores uncharted aspects of German society, especially the cultural manifestations of humor and satire in the Nazi era. His other current research project focuses on the application of complexity theory to a comparative study of societies and their internal dynamics.

Review
This is the most comprehensive DBT resource available to date; useful to both the experienced DBT clinician and new therapist. Lane has taken the evidence based foundations of DBT and expanded and extended the model through new ideas, suggestions and clinical tools. --Cathy Moonshine, Ph.D., MSCP, MAC, CADC III, author of Dialectical Behavior Therapy Volumes 1 & 2

The book shows the interaction of the different skills modules to problem resolution, rather than simply listing each module as if it stands on its own. Clearly written and easy to understand, an excellent resource. --Thomas Marra, Ph.D., President of Center for DBT, author of Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Private Practice

This book is jam packed with new and creative information for both facilitators of DBT and those looking for self help that really delivers. The authors bring their extensive experience in helping folks through the roughest spots of life to expand and improve the already effective DBT model. --Barry L. Duncan, author of Becoming a Better Therapist and co-author of The Heart and Soul of Change

Excellent Resource!
By NeilJohnson
Amazon said it would take 1-2 months to receive, but I got it in just over a week, and I am glad I took the risk of playing the waiting game (loving immediate gratification like most people!). Having used several DBT manuals (Linehan's, Matthew McKay's, and Cathy Moonshine's), I can say that I am extremely pleased to add this to my "toolbox." This book has many skills not covered in other DBT manuals and is expanded in that sense, not in the sense of being overly verbose. I appreciate clear and concise explanations that don't bog me down (or bog down clients I assign bibliotherapy to). I also liked the worksheets and guidelines for many recommended DBT practices, again finding them to explained in practical rather than academic ways. This book will no doubt help DBT therapists (and non-DBT therapists who teach skills) and might be a great resource for people looking to understand DBT skills without a therapist. The only drawback I can think of is not having an included disk to make copies from (in fairness, most manuals don't). This "extra" would decrease time at the copy machine! If you're into DBT or skill-building, this book is highly recommended!

Inspiring and Useful!
By akhill
I'm new to DBT and found this workbook well organized and very useful. I am finding skill-building opportunities in every area of life now! I am inspired to develop my own ideas in this practical format. I was initially puzzled by the book's copyright statement that the pages were not to be copied in any format for any reason without written permission, but when I contacted the lead author by email, he responded very quickly that he always intended for therapists to be able to make copies for use with clients, and that the next printing will make this intention clear. He also said that he encourages therapists to adapt the worksheets to suit their purposes and that it is not necessary to credit this book when doing so. I say kudos to Lane Pederson for sharing so generously, which is in keeping with the philosophy he puts forth in this book that we should all exercise our flexibility and creativity to make DBT skills as usable as we can to as many clients as we can!

Great resource
By Rachael
I attended to a training seminar in DBT last month (mostly an introduction to DBT). I was very excited about what I learned and how I could apply the skills training to my practice. My problem was that I could receive only limited information on the application of the skills training with my clients. I got on Amazon and searched for a book that could walk me through each of the skills so I could learn it, understand it, and then teach it to my clients. This is the PERFECT solution to my problem. The language is very easy to understand and it groups the skills in logical and easy to follow modules. I've adopted some of the skills myself in my personal life and have enjoyed the benefits. All of the clients I've used this with have very much appreciated the skills.
My only wish, as with other reviews, is that the book came with all of the worksheets on CD so I didn't have to make so many copies. Overall, a great resource for those who want to use DBT with their clients and haven't had a ton of formal training in the therapy mode. I imagine it would be great for the general population who would like to learn mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal skills on their own without the help of a therapist.
