About the Author
Born in 1950, TIM DLUGOS was involved in the Mass Transit poetry scene in Washington, D.C., and later, in New York City, in the downtown literary scene. His books include Entre Nous, Strong Place, and Powerless. Dlugos died of AIDS at the age of forty. DAVID TRINIDAD's most recent collection of poetry is the The Late Show. He teaches at Columbia College in Chicago.

Extraordinary Accomplishment

Tim Dlugos died of AIDS in 1990 at age 40. People who knew his work back then realized that he was an impressively talented poet. But it was not until his friend David Trinidad put together this magnum opus of Dlugos's work that the extent of his accomplishment could be seen in full. The result of years of research and editing, this book makes clear that, despite his early death, Tim Dlugos deserves recognition as a major voice in 20th century American poetry.

The major AIDS poet writes in plain language about his life in NYC, describing "the tangled postures lovers learn"

In March 2015 for National Poetry Month, the book discussion group at The LGBT Center in NYC read poetry by Tim Dlugos from "A Fast Life: The Collected Poems of Tim Dlugos." Despite the horrible snowstorm, we had a terrific turnout, including one member who actually knew Dlugos, and some absolutely enlightening and inspiring discussion. (This is why we discuss books and poetry.)

I sometimes have a difficult time reading poetry. This book was huge ("a real door-stopper," somebody called it) so I originally chose a dozen poems to try to focus the reading to a reasonable length, which may have been helpful but also biased the reading toward his later more depressing poems. Many of the early poems are lighter (some of them very light) and don't really point toward the serious tone his writing takes near the end of his life. The poems I originally selected:
SHELLEY WINTERS (a pop culture poem recalling Frank O'Hara)
POEM AFTER DINNER (an occasional poem)
GILLIGAN'S ISLAND (pop culture and commentary)
JE SUIS EIN AMERICANO (humor)
CLUBS I'VE JOINED (a very smart list poem)
AT THE POINT (memoir)
SONNET ("The night he leaves you," more about NYC)
DESIRE UNDER THE PINES (on Fire Island)
SODOM (on The Mineshaft)
SPY OF LOVE (another well-controlled sonnet)
CHRISTOPHER ISHERWOOD (haiku-like brevity and clarity)
THE STEVEN HAMILTON SESTINA (a masterwork of style and meaning)
SLEEP LIKE SPOONS (such a touching ending, such terrific language)
POWERLESS (a major poem and the title of one of his collections)
G-9 (the great AIDS poem made up of short lines holding on for life)
IT USED TO BE MORE FUN (on being mortal and a poet)
RADIANT BABY (on Keith Haring)
D.O.A. (a final poem)

Dlugos's life and work cannot be separated. He was a Catholic monk who left the monastery at the age of 21 in 1971 to become an activist for political and gay causes. He originally moved to Washington, DC, before he moved to NYC. In both cities, he made friends with a number of the leading gay poets and authors of the period including Michael Lally, Joe Brainard, Brad Gooch, Eileen Myles, and Dennis Cooper, among many others whom he identifies in his poems. He was a denizen of the newly liberated gay world found in NYC during the late 1970's before he eventually sobered up and enrolled in the Yale Divinity School, where he hoped to become an Episcopal priest. He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1989 and died in 1990 at the age of 40.

Dlugos is widely known for the poems he wrote while living with HIV and AIDS and is considered the seminal poet of the AIDS epidemic. His long narrative poem "G-9" (which was the name of the AIDS ward at Roosevelt Hospital) is considered one of his major accomplishments.

The critic Marjorie Perloff wrote, “This is poetry of extraordinary speed and energy that fuses fact and fantasy, dream and documentary. Tim Dlugos’ every nerve seems to vibrate.”

Much of his early poetry does seem very fast. The comparison to Frank O'Hara is inevitable (think "The Lunch Poems"). Much of his writing, if not almost all of it, is personal and autobiographical. He's full of pop culture references, and a number of attendees enjoyed reading about NYC in the 1970's and looking for the references: clones, Christopher Street, Danny's Potbelly restaurant, the Ninth Circle hustler bar, streets and addresses, music and bars, and churches and clubs. Many of these references already need footnotes and future readers will depend on quickly disappearing information that may completely slip away any day now.

His language is very common and most of his writing is about everyday events: I had lunch with this guy, I slept with that guy, I thought about another guy, I'm watching TV and going to the movies now, then then going dancing. The complaint is that he doesn't elevate language or his daily occurrences to the level of "great" poetry. He's a regular guy with a specific cadence and consistent point of view, and the poetry often seems uninspired and uninspiring. While modern poetry is written in everyday speech, Dlugos has the ability to show his skill with the use of formal poetic forms.

His most serious free-verse poem, as noted above. is "G-9." It's long and discursive. But two of his other great poems, which we discovered from readers at the meeting, may be able to give you a feeling for his writing. If you don't read anything else, you might want to read these. Climo's (The Egyptian Cinderella; The Irish Cinderlad) adaptation of this Arabian Nights myth offers a capricious twist on the Cinderella story. In preparation for a No Ruz (New Year) celebration at the Royal Palace, Settareh and her stepsisters go to the bazaar to choose cloth for gowns. Settarah, however, gives alms to a beggar and buys a curious blue jug instead. But inside the jug is a pari, or fairy, who grants her wish for a gown. She captures the attentions of the prince, and a lost diamond bangle fallen from her ankle provides the clue to her whereabouts. On the day of Settareh's anticipated wedding to the Prince, the jealous stepsisters seek vengeance and usurp the magical powers of the pari. They fasten Settareh's hair with enchanted hairpins to transform her into a turtledove. But Prince Mehrdad's affections remain steadfast, and it is he who breaks the spell. Historical details in both the verse and illustrations readily transport readers to 15th-century Persia. "Carpets woven in jewel like colors brightened the walls, and the scent of ginger and cinnamon from the Indies and perfumed oils from Egypt hung in the air." Pomegranate trees, jasmine flowers and other Persian botanicals adorn Florczak's (The Rainbow Bridge; Birdsong) effervescent landscapes framed with intricate borders. The characters, however, often appear to be pasted on, lending them a hyperrealistic quality. Still, the exotic setting and cultural details make this one of interest to any collector of Cinderella tales. Ages 5-9. (May)

Kindergarten-Grade 4-After giving most of her money to a beggar, young Settareh spends her last coins on a cracked jug instead of purchasing fabric for a new dress to wear to the prince's celebrations. Resigned to remaining home, she discovers that the pot is inhabited by a pari that is able to grant her every wish. She attends the festival, catches the eye of the prince, leaves behind a diamond ankle bracelet, and is found by the queen. Settareh unwisely reveals the secret of the jug to her stepsisters, who steal it and instruct it to get rid of the young woman. The jug self-destructs, leaving behind six jeweled hairpins that, once placed in Settareh's hair, turn her into a turtledove. When the grieving prince befriends the bird, he finds the pins and pulls them out, thus restoring his beloved. The story is well told, although the drama, and hence the pace, is somewhat subdued. The narrative reads smoothly and majestically and Climo explains her choices in a source note. Florczak's sumptuous illustrations have jewel-like tones that glow against the brownline-paper background, and traditional designs decorate the text. The illustrations are realistic and appealing, although in one scene, Settareh is wearing a blue veil with her face exposed when the text specifies that she and the other women draped themselves in black to conceal their faces. Despite this minor flaw, this is a suitable complement to Climo's other "Cinderella" stories.

PLB 0-06-026765-8 A luminescent interpretation of an ancient Persian tale is Climo's latest entry to her multicultural collection of Cinderella tales (The Irish Cinderlad, 1996, etc.). Motherless Settareh, whose name means star (a reference to the shape of the birthmark on her cheek), has a typically Cinderella-esque existence with her stepmother and stepsisters. That the ignored and often neglected young woman blossoms into a beauty is a foregone conclusion, but here her aid manifests itself as a parifairyin a mysterious blue jar, and Settareh captures the interest of the young prince at the New Year celebration. The lush descriptions of an authentic time and place lend an exotic tone to the familiar tale: ``Each girl and every woman, no matter her age, covered her head with a cloak so that no stranger might look on her face. Then, like a flock of black birds, the mothers, daughters, sisters, and cousins flew down the road to the marketplace.'' Florczak's meticulously researched illustrations faithfully depict the ornate beauty of an ancient land. Life, Love and Jealousy in Persia

In this Persian variant of a Cinderella story, Shirley Climo has used language which invokes the flowery language of the Middle East without the wordiness. Robert Florczak's illustrations show both the simplicity and complexity of Persian art. An excellent pairing of author and illustrator to present a different version of a favorite folk tale.

A shame

This is a totally worthless "reference" book. Don't waste your money.

I have no idea what the author thought he was doing, but for a book that is supposed to be about movies that were made before or later, it fails woefully.

The list is so selective that he fails to include movies that should have been first in line to be discussed, such as "The Big Sleep."

I Hope You Read The Rest Of The Series.....

What I Think….
Even though I'd never read anything previous of Amy Rachiele, I felt like Mobster’s Bones was a fast, clean read and easy to understand! However, though the novel was simple, I really couldn't get in to it. I will say though, Rachiele does a great job with the content of the novel. There were some fantastic scenarios that were full of suspense and kept me on my toes! I cannot imagine how much time and research would have to be done in order to create such accurate images.

Alessandra and Troy create a unique bond when Alessandra is forced into Troy’s care due to an attack on her family. Someone is stalking her and is sparing no cost to make her life unbearable. After a shocking confrontation in her kitchen, Alessandra goes into hiding until the stalker can be found and dealt with. Did I mention she is connected to the Mob? Not only does Troy know this, but he is beyond intimidated by the information. He has never dealt with the Mob directly and doesn't plan to anytime soon. But, when a friend of the family needs a favor, Troy can't say no. It isn't Alessandra's fault this happened to her. But when someone makes an attempt on both of their lives, the duo has to figure out who they can trust and in a hurry. Among all the chaos, Alessandra and Troy find a way to look past the bad and into the good blooming between them.

Now, there were a few things that I found I wasn’t a fan of while reading. Some of the encounters between characters threw me off due to the lack of background information provided. By background information I just mean information that would have been pulled from the rest of the series. Because of this, I questioned their relevance to the story as a whole. I also thought that the sentences lacked extra detail. They stated the main point, but seemed short and choppy to me. Also, I felt like the novel was rushed. There are some major moments in this novel that happen back to back, but have little explanation. There wasn’t really one big climax, more like a bunch of little ones with no real recess.

I have to say, I don't think this should be considered a New Adult Romance, but more like a Young Adult fiction. The novel is extremely clean, with little vulgar language or brief sexual circumstances. I also do not think this should be read as a stand alone story. There just isn't enough information found in the rest of the series to prepare the reader, making it a hard read coming in new. I think I would have enjoyed this novel more, had I been better prepared for the the correct genre and been able to connect with the characters better. I will say, this novel does have great potential for the right reader. I think that the teenage generation would enjoy this immensely.

Good book!

Good Book! Mobster Bones is the fifth book in the Mobsters Series. Date of Publication: June 28, 2015. Pages: 108. This is the first book I read by this author. I enjoyed this book but wished the story was longer.

The two main characters in this book are as Alessandra and Troy . Alessandra is the daughter to one of the members of the mob . She is being stalked by someone unknown . Troy is the one now assigned to protecting her, He is a friend of one of the members of the mob. Can the two of them figure out who's the stalker is and keep each other safe in the process? I was told this could be read read as a standalone. I would recommend reading the other four books before reading this one. Overall I did enjoy it and recommend.

Great Mafia book!!!

If you love Mafia books then you will definitely love this one. It has all the making of a great mafia book. I love Alessandra and Troy together. They balance each other very well.
Alessandra is a mafia princess and thankfully knows how to take care of herself. She has a stalker and Troy has been chosen to watch over her. He does all this while juggling college classes. It isn't easy especially when you have his drunk friend Jake and all the mafia guys hanging around.
If you're following this series unlike myself, since this is my first book by the author, then you will love the fact that you still get some of the other characters. I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more from this author.
