Purchased and read in the Doms of Dark Haven 2: Western Night Anthology.

I loved this standalone story for the anthology. In fact, I ended up wishing this had been a part of a series or a little longer.

Shelby wasn’t a bratty sub, she was just not that experienced. But she was a very fast learner. The story moved quickly for they had only one week together. Shelby not only blossomed under him and became the perfect submissive, but they also fell for one another.

Trevor realized that he’d been missing a challenge of having a sweet submissive who needed his guidance and discipline, and Shelby realized she needed and wanted more than the boring occasional sessions with her friend. The scenes were all scorching hot, but underneath was also this sweet romance. I was rooting for them to work out a way to be together. Their last scene in Dark Haven made me tear up, but the ending was oh so sexy! Definitely a winner for me.

Shelby is a part time sub; she only dabbles and comes to see her friend/Dom a few times a year. This year there is a western themed poker tournament at the BDSM club and when the game gets tight and down to two men the steaks are raised. What is at stake? A week with Dom Trevor, man, what a way to spend a week off! Trevor is fascinated with Shelby and knows he can pack as much training into the week as he can to make her a good sub. Holy crap do they have a great week. I was actually off for a week when I read this and my week was by far the most boring week ever compared to her week! LOL. While things weren’t as hot and as descriptive as I normally like it still worked for me and I really enjoyed this book. If you like BDSM books without a lot of angst or drama this is the book for you.

Fun, fantastic, romantic read

Mike has been in youth ministry for over 25 years. He enjoys running, reading, coaching soccer, and equipping, training and mentoring today.s leaders. He is a frequent speaker at college campuses, conferences and retreats in the USA and Eastern Europe. He and his wife Teresa live in the Philadelphia metro area with their three children- Nathan, Lauren and Arianna. Mike is presently the pastor of youth at BranchCreek Community Church where he gives oversight to Middle School, High School and Young Adults.

Changing Focus of Youth Ministry Today

In "Engage", Mike Harder focuses on an often overlooked but essential component of youth ministry - mentoring. It's easy to plan activities and hang out with students once or twice a week at church and youth group; it's much harder to engage with them and really "do" life together. It takes time, it takes investment, it takes intention and sometimes, frankly, it's really, really hard.

Throughout the book, Mike tells stories of students he and his wife have mentored throughout their years in youth ministry. The focus on being intentional in how they spend their time with the students is key here. It doesn't need to be a big, planned out production - it can be as simple as having a student come along when you run errands or clean up the house. The key to being a true mentor is letting someone else into your life, as it is, in hopes that he or she will take something positive away to apply to his or her own life.

I appreciated the chapter that focused not on preaching to the mentees about areas in their lives that could use improvement or redirection but instead asking questions that lead them to that self-assessment on their own, then helping guide them as needed.

In addition to the examples of students he and his wife have mentored over the years, Mike also focuses on those who have mentored him. This is a great reminder to never stop seeking out those who you can learn from in your field or areas in which you may want to grow.

Finally, Mike points out several times that you are not going to "click" with every person you think would be a good mentor or everyone you might want to mentor. That is something to remember and not allow to discourage you, especially in youth ministry. A student may not have the same connection to you as they would to another pastor or leader - and that's fine. The important thing is to find the right connection that will help them learn and grow in a healthy, positive relationship.

"Engage" is a well-written, thoughful look at mentoring - a must-read not only for those in youth ministry but also anyone interested in coaching, training or teaching.

Mike Harder delivers a masterfully written and practical guide for mentoring the next generation of Christ followers in "Engage: A Youth Worker's Guide to Creating a Culture of Mentoring." Mike reflects over his nearly three decades of experience in youth ministry to offer key principles and insights for today's youth pastors, and volunteer leaders. Mike writes this text with the purpose of reaching today's youth with strategic excellence; every adult who has a part in working with students needs to read this work!

Whenever I do a book review, I use the margins to write a star next to the paragraphs or phrases that stand out and are helpful. There are stars all over my copy of this book! As a youth director/pastor, one of my goals is to reach each one of my students and leaders with Biblically based mentoring techniques. In my context, synonyms for mentoring would be discipleship and shepherding; the core of my ministry, and my personal passion. However, the use of the word "mentoring" , as Mike uses it, opens the doors for all youth volunteers and leaders to exercise this very important practice. It is not just the youth pastor who should be doing regular "life-on-life" mentoring, but also the volunteer youth leaders (life-on-life mentoring being just one crucial aspect Mike talks about in this book).

In his Introduction, Mike gives the rationale for this entire text: "Why should you invest in mentoring relationships? Because Jesus set the model for you. Because the Bible and history are littered with examples of how mentoring relationships made a difference in individual lives and societies..." From the very start of this book, after thirty years of reflection, Mike centers and connects his purpose back to the God-man; Jesus Christ. Jesus made crystal clear in His ministry that investing focused time and strategic effort on others is at the core of the gospel message. As youth leaders, we need to take our example of how to mentor from Christ, and genuinely pour our lives into our youth. However, we must take one step further, and point our students to Jesus Christ and His Word in everything we do.

Again, this book is theologically and Biblically based, but it is also very practical. Mike tells numerous stories of his experiences in ministry to get his points of wisdom across to us in our contemporary, and often, challenging youth ministry contexts.
Mike speaks to numerous areas of of youth mentoring. A few of them are:
1. Identifying who you are personally as a leader, and what kind of students do you naturally connect with.
2. Don't try to be cool with the students. If you are a cool person, great. If not, just be yourself. Students can tell. Very easily!
3. Teach and live the Bible. "Trying to live your life without a foundational knowledge of God is like ripping a page out of a two-thousand page NASA manual and trying to fly the next mission to the moon. You would be doomed to fail" (75).
4. Establish healthy boundaries for mentoring; place of meeting and content of conversion. "Don't say anything you wouldn't be comfortable with the parents hearing."
5. Parents know much more about their teen than we do; don't try to replace the parents. Team up with the parents to best reach the students.
6. Know the direction and goals for the mentoring relationship between mentor(you) and mentee.
7. Be ready to end a mentoring relationship if that is what is needed.

Again, these are just a few of the many great points of wisdom that Mike addresses in "Engage."

It's hard to imagine now, but when The Love Boat premiered in 1977, it was considered so sexually suggestive that Princess Cruises almost didn't allow the show to film on its ships because they were afraid it would give people the wrong image. Yet, in the long run, Garin points out, the series proved to be a critical factor in repositioning ocean cruises as an attractive luxury for middle-class consumers. Just a few years ago, Princess and three competitors accounted for almost 90 percent of the cruise industry's $13 billion annual revenues; when Princess began merger talks with Royal Caribbean, rival firm Carnival swooped in, made the deal themselves and wound up controlling more than half the market. Carnival's founder, the late Ted Arison, provides this lively industry history with one of its most engrossing narrative threads, from the running aground of his original flagship's maiden voyage to his emergence as one of the world's wealthiest individuals. An even treatment with a fascinating storyline...

Being a vacationer who has been on numerous cruises, this book recommendation looked like a certain fit... Devils On The Deep Blue Sea by Kristoffer A. Garin. He does a very good job in revealing how the cruise industry works, and the forces that have shaped it along the way.

The story starts in the late 1950's, when the cruise industry was really nothing more than a way to transport passengers from one location to another. The rich often had a lavish experience, while the "steerage" passengers were cramped and confined to the lower decks with restrictions on where they could go and what they could do. But in both cases, it was still a case of traveling from point A to point B. The airline industry quickly made cruise ships obsolete for rapid travel, and the shipping lines were becoming a footnote in history. But a few people thought that cruising could become a destination in itself, a way to vacation, see other lands, and then return to where you started. But the appeal had to be broad, and the luxuries of first class had to extend to all the passengers. Thru visionaries, financial risks, and mergers, what we have today is a $13 billion dollar industry that is truly global in numerous aspects. But behind the glitter and glamour, there are some less appealing items of interest...

Garin talks about how the cruise industry is largely staffed by impoverished workers from third-world nations who sign on for low base wages and whatever tips come from passengers. To many of us, these base wages wouldn't even support poverty, but they are considerable in the countries where the workers come from. The hours and rules aboard ship are harsh, with 12 to 16 hour days with little time off the norm. The industry also pays little in the way of taxes due to their ship registration being out of country to take advantage of international treaties preventing retaliatory fees. The laws and rights of the United States are not always in play either, as the ship is actually foreign territory. And if that's not enough, many of the tourist destinations are unable to get additional fees from the industry to support their infrastructure, as the industry will threaten to pull out of the port and destroy their tourism. It can be capitalism at its worst...

Personally, this book was better than I expected. I thought it was going to be a muck-raking, "boycott cruises" diatribe, and one that I wouldn't necessarily agree with. But the balance between the story of the cruise lines and the less-savory parts of the industry was just about right. And even the "expose" part wasn't hypercritical. I came away understanding the abuses, but (in many cases) understanding both sides of the issues. And really, it's not much different than what most other industries would do in the same circumstances...

Yes, I'm still going to go on cruises, and I'll still enjoy them. But I'll be even more considerate of the staff that makes it all work, and more in awe of what it takes to pull off the experience, week after week after week...

One of the all-time best business case studies

I cannot say enough about the strong points of this book. Garin would have earned much praise for simply recounting the history of Carnival's extraordinarily rapid conquest of the global cruise industry -- earning founder Ted Arison at his death the title of 'world's richest Jew' and leaving son Micky at the helm of a company that took just over 25 years from its 1971 birth to reach annual profits of $1 billion. Beyond Garin's entertaining story of how the Arisons created both an industry and a fortune, there is so much more to this book: it's a wonderful social history of American vacationing and travel rituals and preferences; a tale of entrerpreneurial takeovers and strategizing every bit as intriguing as 'Barbarians at the Gate'; an investigation of corporate corner-cutting in the labor, environmental, tax, and other regulatory fields as eye-opening as 'Silent Spring'; WildWest-style episodes of mutinous crews and commando-led cruise-ship rescue operations; marketing coups and blunders; the impact of TV's 'LoveBoat' series; along with Caribbean cultural and economic lore from Bob Marley to CARICOM (the island nations' version of the EU). This massive reporting effort is wonderfully well-organized and unfailingly pleasurable to read.

Cruise Book

As the owner of a travel agency, I found this book fascinating. It gives a great history of the 2 major cruise lines, Carnival & Royal Caribbean, and the history of their rivalry over the years. I am not sure that this book is for the everyday cruiser, but if you are involved with the cruise industry I would consider it a must read.

Wonderful!

This series is wonderful and this is probably one of my absolute favorite books in it. It was very enlightening to see the age difference in reverse so to speak. In most of the BDSM books I have read with significant age differences it was almost always the Dom who was older and more experienced. Not here.

Jarod is very sweet and so strong in his own, understated way. Yes, he was lost after he lost his Master but he tried to start over. Several times. The way he was ridiculed by others over his age was heartbreaking and illustrated just how off the mark many people are with their views of this lifestyle.

Eli started off in the doghouse with me. He was self centered in the way he viewed the clubs he was going to. He looked down on 'Pretenders' and I understood that in a way. My problem was how he wouldn't try to improve anything, he just complained about it, never realizing he was part of the problem.

However, Eli's saving grace was how he took one look at Jarod and saw the man and submissive, not an age. He immediately claims Jarod but in the days that follow he proves just how lacking as a Dom he is. He is selfish, but it is because of immaturity, not a true lack of heart. I adored how his friend read him the riot act over his failure to consider Jarod's needs beyond submission.

And when Eli stepped up to the plate I was 100% a fan. He shined in his efforts to correct his mistakes and become the Dom Jarod deserved.

When Jarod has a health crisis Eli proves once again that he can and will be exactly what Jarod needs. The authors handled the aftermath of it wonderfully. Five months ago, my husband suffered the same thing(he did recover too) and reading the emotions and reactions during and after the crisis rang very true.

I think one of my favorite things about this series is the way the couples bond with each other. Jarod and Peter have valid concerns about the age differences with their partners, each on opposite sides of the issue and they talk about it honestly. Peter knows he will most likely lose Thomas many years before his own time. Jarod is dealing with the likelihood that he will leave Eli to grieve for him just as his first master did to him. It is not glossed over and the way they take comfort that their friends will be there to help each partner left behind in grief is absolutely beautiful.

like a lorry driver

This story is all about casting off labels and stereotypes I usually come across in BDSM books.

A fifty year old man can't sub to a thirty year old Dom. A Dom doesn't make mistakes; he has all the answers. A Dom isn't usually a working class hero, like a lorry driver. A Dom doesn't kneel at his sub's feet nor does he cry in his arms.

Nonsense.

I won't proclaim myself a BDSM expert, far from it. But I do believe that this book gets it. Not just the sex and the scenes (which is not how Jarod and Eli start their relationship, these will come later), but the lifestyle itself.

Jarod is one amazing man. He lost his Master and now he doesn't belong anywhere. Eli wants a sub to make him whole.

Their connection is instant, but this is not insta love. From the moment Eli sees Jarod kneeling on the floor, from the moment Jarod hears Eli's voice whispering in his ear, they know they are a perfect match. And because they both want it so bad, they act impulsively.

But Eli is a brave man and owns his mistakes. And he just won't let Jarod get away from him, no matter what.

This was my favorite book from the series and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Secured a spot on my favourites list. Wonderful!

I didn’t think I could like another couple in this series as much as Alex and Leo from An Unlocked Heart. Peter and Thomas (Trusting Thomas) came very close, but K.C. Wells and Parker Williams proved me so wrong with how much I fell in love with Jarod and Eli. Age differences abound in the series but now the roles are reversed with sub Jarod 20 years Eli’s senior.

First, the cover is just beautiful. It reminds me of the first time Eli sees Jarod, kneeling in the club amongst the younger “subs”. Jarod is still grieving the unexpected death of his Master and lover Phillip four years ago. They were together for 24 years and Jarod is lost in his grief and depression, wandering around their large home and keeping it as he did for his Master. Even his mother urges him to get back out and find someone to serve. Jarod knows he is “too old” for the clubs, especially since he is truly looking for someone to serve, though he gives it a try and returns to Spitfire, the club he used to go with Phillip. Over the years he’s been away, the scene has changed so much. The younger subs are different and both the Doms and subs are scornful and mean, ignoring or ridiculing him. Eli, however, sees perfection. Eli is 30 and is looking for a true sub to serve him. He is tired of the way the club has changed and the subs that are there just for recreation. When he sees Jarod’s hopefulness dashed by a Dom, he goes for it and takes him home.

While Eli is enthusiastic and serious about wanting a sub to serve him, he is not very good in the execution, leaving for work early the next morning with Jarod at his house receiving no real instructions or attention to his needs. Having never had a sub for more than play, Eli really doesn’t know what to do. Luckily he has his friend Ben (from Someone to Keep Me) to give him guidance. Ben knows what Eli is looking for and has been trying to get Eli to come to Collars & Cuffs for some time now, but it is not until a horrifying experience when he brings Jarod back to Spitfire that Eli takes Ben’s invitation.

“I held on to him tightly. He was mine, and I’d be damned if I would lose him.”

This moment is a turning point for both men and we are treated to seeing Jarod find a place where he is accepted and he can be himself. I’ll admit while Ben and Scott’s story wasn’t my favorite of the series, Ben seems to be wiser from his experiences and was a great support to Eli, while his sub, Scott, finds something special in the relationship he develops with Jarod.

Jarod’s grief and need for a connection just broke my heart. Shattered it. The authors did such a good job in getting across his feelings of hope and despair, I was lost in it. Jarod not only has to deal with his grief, but he also finds he is facing some new issues revolving around the large age difference between Eli and himself. Jarod has so much to overcome, I found it fitting that Eli is relatively “uncomplicated”. While he needs help learning how to be a good Dom for Jarod, he has no major hang-ups or serious outside issues so he is able to fully commit to their relationship and his own growth as Jarod’s Dom.

While Jarod’s passion is service, he and Eli also explore a variety of kinks including sounding and wax play. Their connection is palpable, whether it’s a tender loving moment or one of the intense, kinky demonstrations or scenes, these two burn up the pages with their chemistry.

It wasn’t just the scenes between Eli and Jarod that pulled on my heart though and without spoiling anything, I found myself completely broken by a scene between Jarod and one of the young subs late in the book (when you read it you’ll know it). While a lot of Jarod’s story is heartbreaking, he really does come back to life at Collars & Cuffs. There is also happiness and joy as Jarod finds that his age isn’t always the barrier he thinks it is and he soon holds a special place with the subs we’ve come to know throughout the series.

I know I’ve mentioned a lot of the prior books, and all the characters show up here, but if you haven’t read them yet, you can jump in here if you just can’t wait to read the rest of the books. Both Jarod and Eli are new to the series and their story can be read on its own, though regular readers will have more of an appreciation for all the secondary characters, especially Peter who has come so far since his first appearance.

I can’t say enough about the wonderful job K.C. Wells and Parker Williams did with this story. It was beautiful on so many levels and has secured a spot on my favorites list. After Jarod and Eli’s happy ending is secured, there is a brief set up for what will be the final story in the series, and I know as much as I’m looking forward to that book, I’m really going to miss this group of characters. That’s what re-reads are for though, right?

About the Author
Kay Kenyon is the author of eleven science fiction and fantasy novels, including A Thousand Perfect Things. She is the author of the critically acclaimed science fiction quartet, The Entire and The Rose. Bright of the Sky was among PW's top 150 books of 2007. The series has twice been shortlisted for the ALA Reading List awards and three times for the Endeavour Award. Four of her novels have been translated into French, Spanish and Czech. A different reality

A young woman wanting to fight convention and follow her heart is lead by magic from the safety of her scientific world of Anglica to Bharata the magically infused country where nothing is as it seems. Betrayal, mystery, love, sacrifice, science and magic all collide in this refreshing read.

I felt some shades of "Heart of Darkness" when I first read the synopsis which threw me back to my high school English classes. But this was so much easier to read. This book was fabulous on several levels. I really enjoyed the mental thought processes that were so well defined. Watching the development of the main character Tori, you experience a significant paradigm shift, from a curious, but unaware young woman, to a woman who looks past the things that are expected of her, to what she can become when she allows herself to be free. The identities of the two nations seem to be an over exaggeration of the basic flaws in different cultures. This allows the reader to consider things from a different perspective. The lotus flowers effect that illustrate different realities and how they effect you is ingenious. So many times you wonder what would have happened if...
I would highly recommend this read to anyone.

Essentially this reads as a treatise on the destructive nature of colonialism and the societal generalizations and stereotypes

In an unusual story, Kay Kenyon has written an alternative history that finds two countries at the center of this universe. The first is Anglica or England that is very comfortable for a western reader, and while some aspects of society are overly stereotypical, it is easily recognizable as a country that is based in science and logic, with spiritual elements being consigned to backrooms if not entirely scorned in society. The second country is Bharata, most closely related to India, and is a country where the spiritual and the magical are not only the norm, but are wholly accepted and proof of the why is not necessary. Again, some elements are also overly stereotypical, and the author chooses to integrate words into the text of the Bharata side of the story in a mix of phonetic and actual spelling or using a phrase on top of its English equivalent which made for some ponderous moments and could cause confusion.

This is most importantly the story of Astoria (Tori) Harding, a Victorian-era woman who pays little mind to societal conventions for women of her time. She has a disability, and is also determined to make her mark in the scientific community as a botanist. Her dream is to follow her grandfather's belief that there is a point at which the scientific and logical can and do exist and thrive with the spiritual and magical. Off she goes to adventure in Bharata - and the story gets wings and just flies.

Kenyon has written an unusual tale, and presented a series of events that are guided or affected by the overly stylized descriptions of the countries in which she has set the action. Essentially this reads as a treatise on the destructive nature of colonialism and the societal generalizations and stereotypes that allowed those systems to take root. While the action and the story is very tied to Tori and her search, the surrounding elements, the inclusion of a mystery, the political intrigue and the varying levels of difficulties that Tori encounters as she travels or explains her beliefs all seem to fill the story with a more politic bent, pointing out mistakes from both sides.

While a beautifully written story that manages to provide plenty of questions for readers, the ending of the book felt rushed, where there were pacing irregularities in the earlier chapters that left many unanswered questions that were relevant to only this story: especially the lack of explanation about the multiple deaths. It was not a quick reading book, although it was engaging and entertaining, and I would be interested to see more from this author.

Magical alternate history

Kay Kenyon is renowned for her solid science fiction, and it's great fun to read this novel, which is much closer to fantasy than traditional sf. You can call it alternate history, or magical realism, perhaps. It's a rich re-imagining of the British Empire in India, with a healthy dash of Victorian feminism. Magic as science is a conceit that works beautifully, and illuminates a colorful and compelling cast of characters, all with the prose Kenyon is so well known for. A great treat of a book!

A collection of freely available information

This book falls far short of being a useful study guide.

Its size is not good value for money (150 odd pages of about 8 inch square pages). The content is a collection of information available elsewhere, mostly as a syllabus and some information on how to answer the different types of questions in the different exams. I would recommend instead of purchasing this books that people look at the table of contents online, and use the contents as searches for information online.

Overall, use your money to save for an online self study course or spend your time instead searching online.
