I view crowd psychology as the central science of the social sciences the way chemistry is the central science of the natural sciences. It can be used in combination with neighboring fields to explain almost everything about social life. It can explain everything from stock bubbles to religious cults to individual beliefs and habits. It provides the best explanation I know of for how memes—bits and combinations of cultural information—spread. My theoretical assumptions are different from meme theory's assumptions and I avoid using the term "meme" in order not to confuse people, but anyone with an interest in the subject will probably want to read this book. Edward Bernays co-founded the public relations profession with his knowledge of crowd psychology. He and the influential journalist Walter Lippmann used it when they and the others on the Creel Committee got the United States into World War I. So this isn't hot air but has been practically applied to good effect.

This book is broad in scope, but a few simple ideas serve as unifying themes throughout it, so I don't think it's too ambitious; it's cohesive. In addition to the things mentioned above, I also talk about elite theory—or why we'll never be entirely equal, or independent of authority—along with evolutionary theory, media studies, economics, management theory, military strategy, political philosophy, creativity, mental illness, and the arts, and about the formation of ideas and habits, and about what crowd psychology has to say about modern technologies like social media and search engines. I'm attempting to construct a complete theory of human nature, and I dedicate my last chapter entirely to my plan for that.

I am aware of modern research in the behavioral and social sciences, and talk a bit about it, but many of the authors I discuss wrote their books a century or longer ago. What is newer is not always better; no one, as far as I know, has treated the subjects I talk about as thoroughly and with as much rigor as the classic authors. Among the older authors I cite, along with the two mentioned above, are crowd psychologists Gustave Le Bon, Wilfred Trotter, and Gabriel Tarde, along with the founder of American psychology, William James, and the Italian elitist school of sociology, which includes Robert Michels, Gaetano Mosca, and Vilfredo Pareto. I do talk about modern controversies, like the one between supporters of kin selection (like Richard Dawkins) and group selection (like E.O. Wilson) in evolutionary biology. Wilfred Trotter has a unique theory which may provide a solution to the problems of altruism; more specifically, he uses the herd instinct—the tendency of the members of a group to believe and behave in the same ways—instead of altruism to explain most social behavior. Modern theorists assume that group behavior must be facilitated by altruism somehow, even if it's only so that an organism can spread its genes. Trotter argues that altruism is a byproduct of the herd instinct, and when the two conflict herd instinct has precedence; or in other words, nonconforming altruists are punished along with selfish "cheaters."

A Book That Exceeded My Expectations

When I started reading this book, I was expecting to find a historical background about crowd psychology covering the writings of the leaders and pioneers of this field. But Noah Halberg exceeded my expectations not only in how thorough was the background he gave but in the manner he has woven these writings in a seamless way through out the book to help achieve the objective of "the uniting of the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities under a single intellectual framework."

I was also expecting that a book about crowd psychology will tap into multiple disciplines mainly in psychology, sociology and political sciences. But yet again Noah Halberg exceeded my expectations by the breadth of disciplines he delves into in his quest to put "a plan for a complete theory of human nature" as he outlined it in chapter 13: Philosophy, linguistics, mythology, fashion, religion, history, theories of war, media, economics and economic bubbles, sociobiology, evolutionary biology, physiology are just some of the disciplines from which xxxxx picked what is relevant or what he made relevant through his powerful insights.

Of particular interest to me was chapter 10: "The Crowd and Modern Technology" in which he expressed his concerns about the impact of the internet and social media on individual liberty. In a world that is "becoming more and more like a big crowd", the boundaries between public and private life is being destroyed. But since "civilization depends completely on free individuals because the crowd is incapable of any but the crudest thoughts" and since "free individuals can only exist when allowed ample privacy" then individual freedom and privacy should be protected to ensure that new ideas (that only originate at the individual level) will continue to emerge and keep uplifting civilization to higher levels.

One more thing in which Noah Halberg exceeded my expectations was the simple reader-friendly language of the book for such a specialized topic. This is why I recommend this book to anyone who would like to retain a minimum level of intellectual privacy and freedom to understand many of the destructive phenomena plaguing our world like riots, faked revolutions, economic bubbles and all kinds of extremism.... and hence avoid falling into such crowd traps. The only warning for the casual reader is that it is not a short book nor a book to be read before going to sleep. It is thought provoking and demands a long attention span.

Gosh its so...bad...one of VS. worse...

The only reason I gave this guide two stars was because it had a walkthrough. Remember the good ol days? When Versus Books released all the good guides? You could never go wrong when you went with Versus Books. I remember their FF7 guide...it was the greatest RPG guide ever made! Then came their Resident Evil 2 guide which is arguably their best (competing with their FF7 and MGS guide for that title), next was MGS and then Zelda 64 and they went on and on.
Is this guide another "homerun" like their Wild Arms 2 guide was? No...in fact its one of their worse guides. Versus Books has obviously started to fall where they once succeeded. Ever since their Grandia II guide on PS2 (never saw the Dreamcast one but I've heard its the exact same) their guides have only grown worse.
First of all, the guide has a nice walkthrough but unlike past guides they don't have "Basic Training" section. They don't even have character bios. What ever happened to Versus Books going beyond your average strategy guide? Now they're BELOW your average strategy guide. The guide goes directly into the walkthrough from the get go. No introductions or telling you how to use the books or anything. They don't tell you stats for overworld monsters and the walkthorugh is full of typos. There was a key point in the game where I was supposed to return to Little Rock. The guide said I had to return to little twister, and while it was easy to differentiate it took a moment because the game didn't say where to go next at that point.
The item appensix isn't detailed but they did cover the Millenium Puzzles. Also, while they didn't take the fun out of te game the walkthrough was very bland and unintersting to read. It was as if a robot was talking to me in my mind. What's worse? Not enough screenshots. They showed ONE measly screenshot for each task to do when you may need a few more.
Also, this guide has no bestiary and that isn't a problem but they also do not tell you overworld monster stats. Also, should an enemy reappear in another dungeon, the guide forces you to flip back several pages (much like their Grandia II guide did).
My biggest gripe...well not so big gripe, was that they gave no tips on how to raise your ARMS which I could've used some suggestions. Another small gripe that I had was that they didn't detail personal skills or arcana very well. I would've like if they had an Arcana table in the back or something but they coudln't even do that! It's all in the walkthrough which is an endless amount of pages!
The only reason to get this guide would be for the EX File Keys and puzzle solutions. Everything else is pretty much useless, no good boss strategies that only tell you to attack and heal. They don't tell you what to expect from a boss like they did in past guides. Maps are also very undetailed with minor flaws but they're difficult to navigate.
Lastly, the world map isn't drawn to scale and they're missing some locations! Not only that but they don't give good directions in the walkthrough to get to those areas.
Now for those red hot juicy secrets that Versus Books is really good at collecting. Wait...umm...there are no cheap tricks anymore! They cover basic secrets already mentioned in the game. They don't help you defeat secret bosses (no overall strategy like they did in WA2 guide.). They give you EX-File keys and they explain the secrets of "Finest Arts" but they don't cover the cheap tricks you can do (There IS an infinite money trick for this game!) and they don't tell you what you can steal from enemies either!
Overall, there is no reason to waste money on this guide. The last good RPG guide I saw from Versus books was Grandia Xtreme. Now that was a good versus books guide, but eversince WA2 and their Pokemon guides, I haven't seen any good RPG guide (or very many good guides period) from Versus Books. Whatever happened to going BEYOND the game? Leave this on the shelf and go to GameFAQs.com for game info.

Another RPG guide by VB and its great! But only 4.5 stars

This is a pretty good guide. I only have about two or three small problems with the guide (see below) but to be truthful it really is one of the best and most well-organized RPG guide I've seen.
To start off, if you want a guide that won't take the fun out of WA3-then this one is for you! There are not plot spoilers in the guide making it more useful.
The walkthrough is well organized and easy to use. Its quick, organized, and most importantly, to the point! With beautifully done maps, and clear screens. The boss strategies are good at first, but then begin to lack a little. Not to mention that the guide doesn't give a strategy for optional bosses, but it will say the stats at least.
You can find all 15 EX keys relatively easily with this guide in hand. They also have all the Millenium puzzle solutions, and all the side quest.
The world map is nice but as in most RPG games nowadays you probably won't need it. The other gripe I had, as I have with RPG guides from VERSUS off the past is that they have no battle tips for beginners and no game basics! What kind of guide doesn't help you get adjusted to the game first?
Oh well, moving on, the items list could've used more detail than I got from it, but hey, its still there so don't worry about it. It would have also been better to have an Arcana list in the back instead of making me fish through the walkthrough.
OVERALL: This was a great guide. Not a "Perfect" guide (their WA2 guide was much better) but not a "Strategy" Guide either. Its more like you companion rather than just a book that gets worn on the shelf.

"The Religion of China: Confucianism and Taoism" (original Free Press edition 1951) is one of a number of works by the German sociologist Max Weber (1864-1920) published in English translation only long after his death, during a post-World-War II boom in Anglo-American interest in his writing. Such interest has recurred at irregular intervals since (one marked by this 1968 paperback reprinting), and Weber's major works, including technical and methodological studies, apparently have all been translated. Initially familiar to readers of English only for his theories on the relation between the Protestant (mainly Calvinist) world-view and the capitalist "rationalization" of economic life ("The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism"), Weber gradually has been revealed as an explorer of the nature of human societies in many times and places.

Sinologists have given his studies of China (here and in a few essays published elsewhere) a somewhat mixed reception. On the one hand, it was an important example of China being taken seriously as major civilization, illustrating basic trends in human social behavior, instead of an exotic footnote ("Oriental Despotism," "The Oriental Mode of Production"). A product of Bismarck's Germany, Weber was acutely aware of the effects of bureaucracy, centralization of authority, and economic rationalization on traditional societies, and used China as a test case for his general theories. The religious responses to China's social and political order are a main, but not the only focus, and his treatment of both Confucianism and (mainly philosophical) Taoism as embodying genuine religious experiences was then unusual. Weber's mastery of the available translations and secondary literature is often mentioned as amounting to nearly a professional command of the field.

On the other hand, Weber *was* unable to consult the primary sources directly. He was acutely aware that much of his information came from missionaries with ideological biases; according to some, however, he often chose the *wrong* missionary to believe. He seriously underestimated the antiquity of some developments in Chinese government. His examples are sometimes wrong, sometimes not especially pertinent; and better ones are missing because he had no access to them. He accepted the view of Confucius as a sort of learned academic with an interest in ethical government (popular among some modern Chinese as well as westerners), without seeming to notice that he has often been regarded as a supernatural figure, a prophet, or, in Weber's own terms, a "charismatic" leader. And the study of Buddhism in China was in its infancy, and its transformative impacts on Confucian and Taoist thought and practice only beginning to be grasped. The study of the very complex history of Taoism *as a religion* is also mostly a more recent development.

Bearing these limits in mind, Weber's study remains fascinating. His suggested interpretations of Chinese society have set the terms for much research attempting to confirm or refute his ideas. He was sometimes wrong about both absolute and relative datings, but he recognized many important trends, and successfully framed them in larger contexts.

As very much an amateur in Chinese studies (with greater limits than Weber, and not nearly as industrious, but able to benefit from modern scholarship), I have long found the book illuminating; I just try to check it against recent studies. For those who are familiar with Weber only for "The Protestant Ethic" (and the attendant controversy), this volume, and its companions on "Ancient Judaism" and "The Religions of India," may come as a considerable surprise.

Those interested in the sociology of Chinese religion (rather than beliefs and practices) will want to take a look at a book by C.K. Yang, the author of the Introduction to this translation. Yang's "Religion in Chinese Society: A Study of Contemporary Social Functions of Religion and Some of Their Historical Factors" (originally University of California Press, 1961) provides information on Chinese religion in relation to government policies, and community and family structures, with documentation for specific regions. I consider it a complement, not a substitute, for Weber, because several chapters are probably too statistical to make it attractive to many readers. Yang also assumes familiarity with a body of professional sociological thought that Weber was still establishing. Of course, it too is beginning to show its age.

Comprehensive coverage of electronic but not nuclear properties of minerals

This is the most comprehensive compendium of the physical properties of rocks and minerals that I have been able to find. It covers mineral and chemical composition of minerals and geothermal fluids; the densities, strengths and creep behavior, as well as electrical, and magnetic properties. Sound velocities and attenuation are well covered as are the visible to infra-red spectroscopic properties of rocks - with a lot of spectra very difficult to find in one place. The authors have done a great service here. The chapter on radiological properties is too brief, only fourteen pages. Missing completely is any discussion or data on spin resonance techniques; those arising from the nuclear magnetic dipole, nuclear electric quadrupole (NQR) or electron spin. NQR was once considered the most powerful analytical technique in mineralogy, next to XRD, and is amenable to practical field implementation. In short, the book does an excellent job covering the electronic properties of minerals and a poor job of covering their nuclear properties.

Perhaps one star too many

I knew this was a short story when I purchased it but I was expecting something a bit longer than a chapter. There are children's books that are longer.
It took maybe 15 minutes to read and it seemed as though it went from murder to confession in even less time.
Not only that, within half a page, the murder suspect went from one name to another.
When a distraught crofter called Hamish to report a murder, she told him Sarah Parkinson was killed. A paragraph later, Hamish is referring to the deceased as Sarah Harrison. Does MC Beaton no longer need an editor?
I adore these characters, I just wish the author treated them better and developed them more fully and paid attention to the details that she used to in her earlier works.

The murder victim had two different last names. First she was called Parkinson then in the next paragraph it was Harrison! Someone should have caught that before release. Very short story.
