Wenzel's watercolor illustrations are vibrant and richly detailed with a nostalgic, old-fashioned quality. Michael Emberley's watercolor, cartoonlike pen-and-ink drawings in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Applewood, 1994) are amusing but crowd the pages. Of the two books, Wenzel's illustrations are a better fit for the text. While a tad too long for storytime, it's a solid representation of the tale.-M. W.

Love the story though

Page quality was not what I expected from "a Little Golden Book". Had the doubt that there were pages missing but couldn't verify it because the pages weren't numbered. Love the story though.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella, and I'm looking forward to a Bride for Keeps as we see what happens with the characters introduced in Love by the Letter.

One of my pet peeves with Christian romance has been that the vehicle that keeps the couple separated for the majority of the book almost always seems forced. Love by the Letter's reason for Rachel and Dex to have never expressed their interest in each other was one of the best reasons I've ever read. I totally bought it, and I wasn't annoyed with the characters that they weren't willing to take more risks with each other.

I also was fascinated by the introduction of dyslexia that Dex struggles with. I have a number of family members who struggle with dyslexia themselves, but I'd never seen it used in a novel before. In Melissa Jagears blog you can read that her husband also has dealt with dyslexia so it comes from experience close to home.

Melissa Jagears has a God-given talent and a skill that is very well honed. You are going to love her novella and we can look forward to the first novel to be released in October.

Dyslexic Dex Stanton needs a bride to help run his homestead. Highly educated Rachel Oliver needs a reason to stay in town and escape her mother's expectations. Can two diametrically opposed people discover love?

In Melissa Jagear's delightful novella, the education disparity between Dex and Rachel sets the reader up for a humorous romance peppered with miscommunication, misunderstanding and misspellings, proving the cliché opposites attract--and love is not often followed to the letter. When it comes to matters of the heart, Dex and Rachel discover honesty and humility trump poetic verse and lyrical prose.

With fluid writing and precise historical research, Ms. Jagears pens believable characters and conflict true to prairie life in the 1800s. Love by the Letter is a short, satisfying prequel to Ms. Jagears full-length debut, A Bride for Keeps.

About the Author

Peter Robinson is a Professor of Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition in the Department of English at Aoyama Gakuin University. His research interests are in second language acquisition; applied psycholinguistics; cognitive psychology; cognitive linguistics; consciousness and awareness during SLA; attention and memory during SLA; second language task complexity; intelligence, aptitude and SLA; experimental research methods; SL syllabus design. He has published extensively in International Review of Applied Linguistics, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Language Learning, and Applied Linguistics. He is on the editorial boards of Asian Journal of English Language Teaching, International Review of Applied Linguistics, TESOL Quarterly, and Studies in Second Language Acquisiton.

Nick Ellis is Professor of Psychology at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  His research interests address a range of issues in applied psycholinguistics. He has published broadly in the areas of first and second language acquisition; implicit and explicit learning; dyslexia; vocabulary acquisition; the role of working memory; and computational modeling. He was the editor of Language Learning from 1998-2002. Consideration of usage-based and connectionist models of language and their insights for second language learning have been important themes in his research for the past several years. His most recent work focuses on frequency effects and their possible implications for second language acquisition.

He pastors First Baptist Church in Linden, Florida, where he lives with his wife, Jenn, and their son, Josiah. As engaging and practical as it gets!

This book is such a smooth and profound read! I'm utilizing it with my students as part of a teaching series on the foundations of faith in Christ. Not only is this book a tool for faith defense, sound theology, and solid doctrine, but it is also very engaging! It's a practical tool for teaching, small-groups, and sermon prep.

Smiths' way of thinking and writing translates so well for teaching elements of faith that are often over-complicated by teachers who sacrifice engaging and applicable teaching at the altar of sounding smart. You won't get bored reading it and you have some "aha" moments of illustrations and statements you can use to help others with their faith development.

This book is not baby food. It's a big juicy steak-- a tender and well-seasoned steak that anyone can digest. I don't often write reviews. And, I don't often find a book on faith I enjoy enough to finish. This one is high up on the list and I will definitely finish it and teach through it.

As a non-Christian I find this book accessible and a quick read but no more convincing than others of its type

I received this book free for review from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Despite the privilege of receiving a free book, I'm absolutely candid about it below because I believe authors and readers will benefit most from honest reviews rather than vacuous 5-star reviews.

This book is an accessible introduction to the Christian faith. It covers all the standard topics from what is God? Who is Jesus and the Holy Spirit? And of course all the various points of what happens after you’re dead and what should you do while you’re still alive. In the interest of full disclosure, however, it must be noted that I am not a Christian and generally tend to view the mystical aspects of the Christian faith as pure hogwash. But in the interest of honest reviewing I will not let that obscure my vision as I look at this book as a purely academic endeavor.

To the positive, the book is, as it claims, very uncomplicated and easy to follow. It also adheres to the familiar and rigorous pattern of introducing a topic to you, telling you what it means to you and then backing up the point with citations from the Bible itself. It's an accessible but also academic form that the author has done a good job of using to make the potentially complicated very easily digested.

The only negative I would point out is that the book isn't really breaking any new ground. I've read lots of similar Christian "explainers" and they all seem to follow very similar lines. These are the same basic arguments that I’ve read a dozen times and as an atheist I’m no closer to believing them in this accessible form than I was when I read them in C.S. Lewis’ "Mere Christianity."

In summary, this book is what it says it is. It’s very accessible and a great primer for those who might be confused. I’d suggest, however, that it is just that though, a primer. Those who want a more in depth take or have deeper doubts, I'd suggest you go straight to the Lewis and skip this one.

An easy-to-read book for those who are find it hard-to-believe

I must hand it to David R. Smith, he has a very keen and inviting way of putting complex ideals into a layman terms. Anyone struggling with understanding things like the trinity or church community will not only be comforted, but also encouraged by Christianity: It's Like This. As a seasoned believer, I found the Scholar Sidebars to be very informative and thought provoking. Youth ministers in particular would find this book to be a useful tool when engaging with struggling students.
