Still great but a quarter of the chapters require an access code!

I have been using the various editions of this book to teach Java programming for a number of years. In terms of content the previous editions of this book have been very solid and I would them a 5 star rating. Although this 10th edition continues the tradition of solid content, I cannot rate it above 4 stars because eight chapters (that used to be part of the printed book in the previous edition) are now only accessible online. This is both inconvenient and expensive.

The online material requires an access code that is valid for only a year. This code comes as part of a new copy of the book. If you buy a used copy(for which the code has already been used), or if your code expires you will need to buy another one year code to access those eight chapters.

You get what you pay for...

I think I have bought just about every 'learning Java' book out there, with limited exuberunce, until this book. The advantage this text has over others is to successfully 'weave' the learning of Java as the chapters progress. Other texts do accomplish this to some extent, but I've never seen this achieved to this degree of balance. This book is a heads down, hands on learning device.

Many books provide a single example that gets more and more complex as the chapters, and (hopefully) your skills, progress. Deitel certainly does this (via an Elevator simulation), but also accomplishes this on many different levels with plenty of smaller programs. Each example is explained *line by line* without exception. Additionally, you are provided with example program output right on the page.

I've noticed many 'learning Java' books show you code snippets and little output if any (e.g. Eckel's book, which I love for other reasons), leaving it up to your imagination to put it all together in the context of a complete program.

This text appears to be prepared for the classroom, from its thorough content (25 chapters, 7 appendices, 1400+ pages, cdrom) and available lab and instructor companion books. There is a nice, effective use of color without being distractive like some other texts I've seen.

The negatives are the length, cost and (ouch) the weight. It is one of the heavier books in my collection, for sure!

To summarize, if you are a C programmer looking to quickly jump into Java, or perhaps a genius with a photographic memory, this may not be your first purchase. If you are a newbie, have limited experience with Java, or have been disappointed with other texts, I think you may find this to be the most complete book out there.

Be aware, if your buying the Kindle Edition of this book, there is no Access-Code to the Pearson publisher web-site, normally included in the paper edition, which provides additional video and help information. You can however, buy an Access-Code from the publisher for $30! ... so add that to the cost of your Kindle Edition.

This ultimately led to the economic conflict that provided a major impetus for the resistance that culminated in the Revolution of 1952—the most important revolutionary event in Latin America since the Mexican Revolution of 1910. The emergence of another revolutionary movement in Bolivia early in the millennium under Evo Morales makes this study of its Cold War predecessor an illuminating and timely exploration of the recurrent tensions between U.S. efforts to establish and dominate a liberal capitalist world order and the counterefforts of Latin American countries like Bolivia to forge their own destinies in the shadow of the “colossus of the north.”

“The sexenio—the six years between the violent overthrow of populist military president Gualberto Villarroel in 1946 and the rise of the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR) in 1952—has been examined by many studies as a backdrop to Bolivia’s national revolution, but no published treatment of the period in English or Spanish is as thorough as this one. For the next generation

I enjoyed these books when I was a child. It came in quite handy when my nephew was a little boy and hated reading. I believe the key to creating a love of reading is to give them a subject they will enjoy. He loved dirtbikes. So Ralph S. Mouse it would be. He read all three of the series. Now that he has a baby boy, I thought I better buy them in hardback to make sure I will have copies to last another generation.

Great classic book. The book jacket does not match the one pictured and I ordered it twice trying to get the correct book jacket to complete our set. The new book is 'updated' along with the illustrations which have lost some of their charm. My boys (3 & 5) love Ralph's adventures!

Simple, concise helpfulness in essay writing

In her book, "The College Guide to Essay Writing',Jill Rossiter begins by stating, "The ability to communicate effectively in writing is a vital skill."

How very true.

Her book is masterful in solving the mysteries of lucent writing in a simple organized manner. Everything she recommends is worthwhile considering before putting pen to paper.

"Know Your Audience" is an admonition that is important in writing as well as in speaking. She breaks down this topic, as she does the other topics, in an easy, understandable way.

I wish I had this concise book when I was attempting to write when in college. It would have made writing a far richer and certainly a more pleasant experience.

I strongly recommend this book.

I have never felt so taken advantage of as I do after receiving this "pamphlet". Upon opening to the table of contents the first 4 pages fell out of the cover. I have been given religious tracts on the street that were better produced than the book. It can not be read without it falling apart. As for the content I do not believe it has any real value. The section of "Documentation" I found to be of absolutely no use. I read the reviews and believed them, what a mistake. I believe this to be 75 pages of very elementary information. I really feel cheated and the sad fact is the book is so poorly produced that I can not return it, the condition after opening the cover makes it worthless. If you need any real help in college writing I suggest you keep looking.

Zootopia Rocks

Great book that follows the storyline of the movie. The graphics are fantastic. My 4 year old daughter knows the movie very well so she can look at the pictures and "read" the story to Mommy and Daddy. The book is well made with a quality cover and quality paper that will withstand an aggressiveness turner.
