Love this series - now where is book seven?

Love this series, even if Colin Gee needs an editor. The counterfactual - after Germany is defeated, Stalin distrusts the Allies and fears their almost ready atomic bombs enough to launch an all-out assault on Western Europe - is credible. As he says, "We must all give thanks it did not all go badly wrong in that hot summer of 1945." About 3,000 pages later, the story twists are legion, complicated characters one cares about come and go - there are heroes and honorable, good patriotic people on all sides - along with some arch villains, again not limited to one side. Life is complex. The author spends a lot of time describing battles at the individual unit level, and laying out in excruciating detail many gory ways in which combatants die. He does not intend to offend, but wishes that his general audience knows of the horrors of war, "...lest we grow too fond of it." Some reviewers of book six quibble that President Truman allows himself to be unduly intimidated by adverse public opinion and war weariness in the US (some of it stirred up by communist agents). President Franklin Roosevelt (next to Lincoln) was probably the best wartime leader the US ever had. He was a master at not leading too far out in front of public opinion - could not decisively deal with the evil of Nazi Germany until after Pearl Harbor had roused the American people. Even in a story, Truman could not do whatever he saw fit while ignoring the other branches of government and public opinion. This is like each successive volume in the Harry Potter series - I eagerly away Book 7 - supposedly the last, but unless it is 2,000 pages long I have no idea how the author can wrap everything up satisfactorily. I am also mindful of a certain fantasy writer whose Wheel of Time series originally was to be four volumes. It swelled to seven volumes and ended up at thirteen volumes, the last three ghostwritten by a handpicked successor after the author's untimely death from illness. I hope this does not happen to Mr. Gee, even if Red Gambit does go to eight or nine volumes

I am a fan of alternative history novels and this series is the best I have read

This is the 6th installment in Red Gambit series. I am a fan of alternative history novels and this series is the best I have read. The attention to detail, the characters and the depth of the story is unequaled. I recommend this series without reservation.

A six star effort!

A six star effort! This installment in the Red Gambit series is head and shoulders above any of the previous novels in the series. The author has grown and matured a lot since the beginning, since his characters have become multi-dimensional and a lot more complex. The depiction of the Soviet leaders is marvelous--especially of Beria and Stalin. There are really several interesting characters as protagonists from both sides: Ernst August Knocke, Marion Crisp, Dwight Eisenhower, First Sergeant Hanebury, and a host of others for the Allies; all versus Tatiana Nazarbayeva, and other Soviet tank officers for the Soviets. many of the characters introduced don't "hang around" long enough to be developed in greater depth.

No spoilers from me here, as the story unfolds on a wide scale from China in the East to Hamburg in the West. But there is duplicity and espionage rampant from the Soviets, and heroism from both sides.

This series is in an overall view--magnificent! If I could give it six stars, I would. After waiting around to order my copy, as I re read the entire set leading up to this 6th volume, I ordered the Kindle version to keep going; my hard copy should arrive before long. I stayed up until 02:30 finishing the book, and my brain cells were crying for "more, more!"

Doré's Final Work

I bought this edition of Poe's classic poem on impulse during the holidays, mostly because the price was right and because I have always been partial to Doré's illustrations. In the past few years, I've purchased several of these large (12 x 9 1/2) hardbacks showcasing Doré's work, including Dante's Divine Comedy, and Scenes from the Bible, and I also have the old Dover paperback of 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. I think these are exciting additions to my bookshelves, and, at the same time, I hope that Doré's work might act as a lure for the kids, inspiring them to investigate the literature to which these engravings belong.

To my mind, this edition of 'The Raven' has two specific flaws and some other small details that the publishers could have improved. The first, and most critical, is the book's layout. After a short biography of Poe and Doré, the full text of 'The Raven' is reprinted on four pages - sans illustrations. Immediately after, Doré's engravings begin, generally on the right hand page with the appropriate section of the poem on the left - but the complete poem is not included throughout the illustrated section. Instead, onlly excerpts are given, presented like captions. In other words, you cannot read the book as you might if you were reading an illustrated story - as, for instance, you might to children - without turning back to the first few pages. Approximately 25% or so of the poem is missing on the pages opposing the illustrations, and though I have tried, I can't think of any good reason for this, unless it has to do with some bizarre copyright rule.

The other flaw is intrinsic - these were Doré's last illustrations, and in comparison with his earlier work, I felt that on average they were washed out and indistinct. It is possible, of course, that Poe's dreamy, gauzy stanzas was what Doré was attempting to reflect, but one of the appealing aspects of his work is its sharp contrasting figures and distinctive expressions. I don't want to suggest that 'The Raven' is completely devoid of Doré's signature style - it isn't - but overall, it doesn't rise to the inspiring levels of his scenes from the Bible, or to his work on Coleridge's 'Ancient Mariner'. The compositions I thought were intriguing, but the execution only fair.

Other points that readers may or may not see as deficiencies include the other poems selected to fill out the volume, and their accompanying illustrations. To break up the text, the publishers used a great deal of clip art, which, truthfully, looks like clip art. Of course, there aren't any other engravings by Doré to correspond to these additional poems, but unfortunately, this other art feels 'tossed in' after 'The Raven'. And one last note, which is truthfully very minor and not likely to bother anyone else - in his short biography of Poe that precedes the main text, Dr. Brook Haley indulges in some pop Freudian psychoanalysis when listing the influences on Poe's life, and he also tends to present conjecture as fact when squaring the historical record.

These last few points in and of themselves do not detract enough from the book to mark it down in rating, but in conjunction with the incomplete sections of the poem facing the illustrations, I would drop the book's grade from 4 stars to 3 1/2. About the Author
Marguerite Donnadieu, better known as Marguerite Duras (4 April 1914 - 3 March 1996) was a French writer and film director. She was born at Gia-Dinh, near Saigon, French Indochina (now Vietnam), after her parents responded to a campaign by the French government encouraging people to work in the colony. Marguerite's father fell ill soon after their arrival, and returned to France, where he died. After his death, her mother, a teacher, remained in Indochina with her three children. The family lived in relative poverty after her mother made a bad investment in an isolated property and area of farmland in Cambodia. The difficult life that the family experienced during this period was highly influential on Marguerite's later work. An affair between the teenaged Marguerite and a Chinese man was to be treated several times (described in quite contrasting ways) in her subseqent memoirs and fiction. She also reported being beaten by both her mother and her older brother during this period. At 17, Marguerite went to France, her parents' native country, where she began studying for a degree in law. This she soon abandoned to concentrate on political sciences, and then law. After completing her studies, she became an active member of the PCF (the French Communist Party). In the late 1930s she worked for the French government office representing the colony of Indochina. During the war, from 1942 to 1944, she worked for the Vichy government in an office that allocated paper to publishers (in the process operating a de facto book censorship system), but she was also a member of the French Resistance. Her husband Robert Anthelme was deported to Bergen-Belsen for his involvement in the Resistance, and barely survived the experience (weighing on his release, according to Marguerite, just 84 lbs). In 1943 she changed her surname for Duras, the name of a village in the Lot-et-Garonne d partement, where her father's house was located. She is the author of a great many novels, plays, films, interviews and short narratives, including her best-selling, apparently autobiographical work L'Amant (1984), translated into English as The Lover. This text won the Goncourt prize in 1984. The story of her adolescence also appears in three other forms: The Sea Wall, Eden Cinema and The North China Lover. A film version of The Lover, produced by Claude Berri, was released to great success in 1992. Other major works include Moderato Cantabile, also made into a film of the same name, Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein, and her film India Song. She was also the screenwriter of the 1959 French film Hiroshima mon amour, which was directed by Alain Resnais. Duras's early novels were fairly conventional in form (their 'romanticism' was criticised by fellow writer Raymond Queneau); however, with Moderato Cantabile she became more experimental, paring down her texts to give ever-increasing importance to what was not said. She was associated with the Nouveau roman French literary movement, although did not definitively belong to any group. Her films are also experimental in form, most eschewing synch sound, using voice over to allude to, rather than tell, a story over images whose relation to what is said may be more-or-less tangential. Marguerite's adult life was somewhat difficult, despite her success as a writer, and she was known for her periods of alcoholism. She died in Paris, aged 81 from throat cancer and is interred in the Cimeti re du Montparnasse. Her tomb is marked simply 'MD'.
