About the Author

Kenneth R. van Wyk is a career security guy, having started with Carnegie Mellon University’s CERT/CC in the late 1980s and subsequently worked for the United States Department of Defense and in several senior technologist roles in the commercial sector. He is the co-author of two popular O’Reilly and Associates books on incident response and secure coding. He now owns and runs KRvW Associates, LLC, a software security consulting and training practice in Virginia, USA.

Mark G. Graff is the CISO of NASDAQ OMX. Formerly the chief cybersecurity strategist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, he has appeared as an expert witness on computer security before Congress and analyzed electronic voting machine software security for the state of California. A past chairman of the International Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), Graff has lectured on risk analysis, the future of cyber security, and privacy before the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Pentagon, and many U.S. national security facilities and think tanks.

Dan S. Peters has been involved with security for longer than he had first expected when he stumbled into this field out of curiosity while making a good living as a consultant and a commercial software developer. Many security disciplines are exciting to him, but mobile security has been the most intriguing topic as of late. Before working on this book, Dan repeatedly shared his passion for security in conference presentations and numerous publications.

Provides a different approach on ensuring software security

To date, most software security books have focused solely on writing secure code and educating developers on how to do that.

In Enterprise Software Security: A Confluence of Disciplines, authors Kenneth van Wyk, Mark Graff, Dan Peters and Diana Burley take a different, and ultimately necessary approach. Their tactic is that treating software security as an autonomous discipline doesn’t work. With is needed is, as the titles notes, a confluence, a process of merging two autonomous groups. In this case, those groups are software development security and network security.

By having enterprise security interact with their software engineers and developers (which is in truth, not such a radical idea), the ability to fully protect software can be actualized.

The authors note that it is an imperative for these two groups to collaborate to ensure effective enterprise security. Obviously, just placing these two groups in a conference room and telling them to work security out is a method that is bound to fail. Hence, the book provides a holistic approach and method in which they can work together.

The book shows how this confluence will work throughout the entire software development lifecycle; from inception, design, implementation, testing, deployment, operation, to software maintenance and more.

As noted, this is not secure software guide, such as Robert Seacord’s superb CERT C Coding Standard: 98 Rules for Developing Safe, Reliable, and Secure Systems or Java Coding Guidelines: 75 Recommendations for Reliable and Secure Programs. Readers looking for detailed coding guidelines or ways to write secure code against the OWASP Top 10 won’t find it in this title.

What the book does offer is a method to enhance software security by ensuring those who are expected to create and maintain it, and support the platforms it runs on, play nicely. That act of having software development and enterprise security place nicely in the corporate IT word is not a trivial endeavor. With that, Enterprise Software Security: A Confluence of Disciplines details a timely approach on how to take this confluence, and make it work in an enterprise IT environment.

This is a groundbreaking view of software security, which is made all the more important by the fact that we have known, and ignored, the wisdom expressed here far too long. It makes eminent good sense to view software security development systematically and comprehensively rather than as a pure technical challenge. That is because there are a lot of things that can go wrong and they all have to be addressed if you want to create a truly trustworthy product. I believe it was Einstein who said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, which describes the current industry approach to a “T”. This book changes the paradigm and as a result perhaps we are finally on the way to better and more secure code.

Will Eisner was born William Erwin Eisner on March 6, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. By the time of his death on January 3, 2005, Will Eisner was recognized internationally as one of the giants in the field of sequential art, a term he coined.

Magazine, which is still being produced today. Will Eisner taught Sequential Arts at the New York School of Visual Arts. The textbooks that he wrote based on his course are still bestsellers. In 1978, Will Eisner wrote A Contract with God, the first modern graphic novel. This was followed by almost 20 additional graphic novels over the following 25 years.

The "Oscars" of the Comic Industry are called The Eisner Awards, and named after Will Eisner. The Eisners are presented annually before a packed ballroom at Comic-Con International in San Diego, America's largest comics convention.

Wizard magazine named Eisner "the most influential comic artist of all time." Michael Chabon's Pulitzer-prize winning novel The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is based in good part on Eisner. In 2002, Eisner received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Federation for Jewish Culture, only the second such honor in the organization's history, presented by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman.

M16 Operation Manual Used Comic Book Approach

The AR15 civilian rifle is often targeted by anti-gun people as an "assault weapon" but during the Vietnam war its military equivalent, the M16, was often hated by grunts in the field because of its often balky action. It was a far cry from the AK47s used by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops. The Russian-designed AK47 and its variants fired a .30 caliber round and rarely if ever malfunctioned -- even if covered with dirt, water and slime.

To help solve the problem with the new rifle, the U.S. Army under Chief of Staff Gen. William Westmoreland in 1969 brought comic book immortal Will Eisner, creator in 1940 of one of the most iconic comic books, back to the drawing board to repeat the success he had as a WWII veteran in producing an instruction manual that works and is fun to use.

As gun expert Robert A. Sadowski points out in his introduction to "The M16AI Rifle: Operation and Preventative Maintenance" Eisner used sex appeal with a curvy female narrator to get the attention of soldiers having problems with their M16 rifles. I've talked to a number of Vietnam vets and to a man they hated this new weapon. They preferred the predecessor, the .30 caliber M14, which had replaced a number of weapons, including the Garand M1, the M1 Carbine, etc. Hampered by a wooden stock -- later replaced with with a fiberglass one that withstood the tropic conditions of Southeast Asia better than the timber one -- the M14 used a round -- 7.62X51 mm NATO (.308 Winchester) -- comparable to the AK. This round was deemed too powerful to be used on full automatic, so most of the rifles were locked on semi-automatic. Today the beloved M14 serves as the basis for the M21 and M25 sniper rifles.

Comic books were something the troops in 'Nam could understand, so the joint venture between Eisner and the Army was a marriage made in heaven. How immortal is William Erwin "Will" Eisner (1917-2005)? The comic book equivalent of the Oscars, Emmys, Grammies and Tonys is called the "Eisner" award.

The 32-page booklet was more than a simple manual and step-by-step guide, this unconventional yet important military document tried to appeal to soldiers with suggestive chapter titles such as "How to Strip Your Baby," "What to Do in a Jam," "Sweet 16," and "All the Way with Négligé." A copy of the booklet was issued to nearly every soldier serving in Vietnam. If manufacturers produced instruction books like this, they wouldn't be tossed into a dark drawer corner: They'd be read.

In addition to the informative Introduction, Sadowski supplies a history of the M16 and a timeline of the .223 caliber (NATO 5.56) rifle.

This is a great book for any Vietnam veteran, as well as any firearms collector and shooter. As an NRA member, a member of a Texas gun club and a member of the Texas State Rifle Association, I approve this book for anyone interested in firearms.

M16 Operator's Manual

When all else fails, read the manual! The bulk of this little hard bound book, printed on quality paper, is a 32 page US Army operation and maintenance manual published 1 July 1969, during the height of the Vietnam War (and not incidentally the year your reviewer was drafted). Topics covered include field striping, jam clearance, cleaning, lubrication and magazine operation and assembly. Whilst not a comic book, the manual has many well done comic book style 3 colour (black, white and orange) illustrations that clearly take the reader through the operation and maintenance of the M16A1 rifle and its "shorty" carbine variant. An additional 15 pages are devoted to an illustrated history of the AR-15/M16 rifle. Far better illustrated and much easier to understand than a standard Colt® owner's manual, this excellent little manual would seem a must for owners of AR-15/M4 style rifles and carbines, and for readers interested in the weaponry of the Vietnam War era.

Great Format!

Over 40-years ago I received this book when in Army Boot Camp. I have no idea what became of it. I purchased a Rock River AR15 about 5 years ago and it came with a US Military field manual. I found it a bit strange that it would come with a US Government manual with the firearm. The M16A1 Rifle: Operation and Preventive Maintenance is a very step by step manual with illustrations. It also covers many useful tips that I had forgotten over the last 40+ years. I would definitely buy it again as I do not clean it like I did each and ever day back then. Details get cold if you know what I mean.

About the Author
Jim Kartalamakis was born in Salonica, Greece. He went to Toronto, Canada, to study electrical engineering, and at 23 bought his first Alfa, which was where it all started. Thirty years later, Jim still fondly remembers the life and times of the ARCC (Alfa Romeo Club of Canada). He returned to Greece in 1979, and ever since has had only one make of car, albeit different models – from a 1750 GT through to an Alfetta GTV, a 75 3.0 to, currently, another 75 3.0 and a 1.8 Turbo. For many years Jim was a technical writer for several car magazines, and the official Alfa Romeo technical manual translator in Greece.

A gearheads bible for Alfa's little twin-cammer

Is the material dated...most of it probably, but so is the subject. There is very little available for those of us who have this love-hate passion with old cars, especially if our object of affection is one of the many lovely and sometimes obscure models or makes from Europe. The Alfa four cylinder twin-cam engines comes from a time when the owner of a car could, if they felt like it, tune or modify the car without having to remap a silicone chip (I've looked all over my Weber's and I have not been able to find a serial or USB interface for my laptop). Today's designs are marvels of efficiency and reliability but for many of us whom like to get grease under our fingernails working on pre "HAL" controlled jewels like the Alfa inline TC fours and sixes, this book conveys a trove of information on what will work in our quest to squeeze the most performance from our lovely Italian mistresses (imho).

Must Have for Alfa Dogs

This is a wealth of info for the cars in question. Informative, well-written, the voise of experience speaks. While you will not agree with all the conclusions drawn, this update takes years off your learning curve. The author is congenial without being smarmy, and offers a book that needed to be written. Don't modify your Alfa without it...
