In the Shadow of Islam, by Isabelle Eberhardt

In the Shadow of Islam is an extraordinary evocation of the desert and its people by a woman who dressed as a man in order to travel alone and unimpeded throughout North Africa. In 1897 Isabelle Eberhardt, age 20, left an already unconventional life in Geneva for the Morroccan frontier. Gripped by spiritual restlessness and the desire to break free from the confinements of her society she traveled into the desert, and into the heart of Islam. Her experiences inspired a profound self-examination, and In the Shadow of Islam is today regarded as one of the true classics of travel writing.

From Kirkus Reviews
A European woman who assumed the persona of a young male Tunisian student describes her remarkable journey into the Sahara in colorful and textured, albeit romanticized, vignettes. In 1897, Isabelle Eberhardt (The Oblivion Seekers, not reviewed), born and raised in Geneva, traveled with her mother to Tunis, where both converted to Islam. Eberhardt spent much of the rest of her life in Algeria; this work comes from notes she made during 1904 as they were later edited and published in France by Victor Barrucand. Despite this cleanup of the notes, some intriguing internal tensions remain: Eberhardt says her male persona (which Arabs respected, even when they saw through it) allows her to travel without attracting notice, but in a low moment she notes that she attracts disapproval. Near the Algeria-Morocco border, she muses with some pleasure that nobody knows precisely where the boundary is, yet soon (in one of the few hints at the region's volatility) she trades her Moroccan attire for Algerian to avoid annoying residents. When individuals and settings attract her eye she describes them vividly and concisely, whether she is passing a madman reciting verses from the Koran or taking tea with male students at a mosque. (Her garb ironically restricts her access to--and ability to learn about--women; interestingly, she seems not to mind.) Her observations on the play of light and color over the desert are made with an artist's eye, and her musings on travel and isolation reveal a pensive side. Yet far as she journeys, literally and metaphorically, she is still dogged by her prejudices: Jewish women cast ``provocative leers,'' and Jewish men possess ``insinuating and commercial abilities''; blacks can be ``repulsive'' and, when dancing, both ``childlike'' and ``barbarous.'' Though lacking a needed glossary for the many Arabic terms used, this slim volume makes a welcome addition to the information available on an extraordinary woman. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
"Her writings, and her sheer modernity, stand up to modern scrutiny . . . Not only have the stories she collected become invaluable oral history for the North Africans, but her perception of Islam as a future, and not a spent, force on the world stage has proved prophetic. In that, as in the rebel-without-a-cause about her, she has proved ahead of her time."  —Daily Telegraph

Eberhardt Shines Even Through a Sabotaged Translation
By Jamilah A. Alexander
This volume of Isabelle Eberhardt's original Dans L'ombre Chaude de Islam "In the Warm Shadow of Islam" was penned in 1904. As a big Eberhardt fan I still enjoyed reading this slim 1993 edition although it's lamely billed "In the Shadow of Islam". Translated by Sharon Bangert, the omission of this single word from the title, "Warm", quite neatly reverses its meaning. Thus the translator or publishers (Peter Owen Publishers) chose to slyly sabotage Eberhardt's empathic sympathetic message about her chosen faith Sufism/Islam with a beckoning yet ominous tang. I suppose her original title, 'In the Warm Shadow of Islam', (emphasis mine) was too long and Islam-friendly for today's market?

Thus, the publisher's choice perpetrates the ever popular anti-Islamic bent. That said, it's the brilliance of Eberhart's work that manages to shine through even a biased translation.
Without ado, let me provide some of my favorite quotes from In the Shadow of Islam:

"To the extent that I feel myself saturated by ancient, unshaken Islam, which here seems to be the very breathing of the earth...And I understand that one could end one's days in the peace and silence of some southern zawiya, end in ecstasy, free of yearnings, confronting only radiant horizons. " pg 114

"I have jotted these reflections in the margin of a letter...Having written them, I relapse into my feeling of exile, wishing to bury myself even deeper in this hostile south, without any desire for the Paris I have known, where the newspaper's lip-service to feminism was even more repugnant to me than the Parisian coquettes.

I have said nothing in my response worth reading. Why bother? One day paths separate, destinies crystallize. And this is so much more than having made a few friends. When they are good enough to invite us to share their foreign happiness, let's show them what's possible to a true fraternity of minds.

Let's regret nothing, since our happiness and theirs will consist in letting ourselves go one day, into mysterious currents which will carry our souls adrift towards impossible shores. Then we'll enjoy the intoxication of decadence and shipwreck; and wandering over the immense beaches of the night, we'll feel within us the seeds of suffering begin to germinate." pg 70

"...forgetting the principals of tolerance propounded by Islam at its purest..." pg 49

It strikes me that prayer, and dreams, too, should never end." pg 60-61

Please enjoy this timeless piece of writing...still relevant and convincing.

At times both poignant and prescient, "In the Shadow of Islam" is the revelation of a brilliant mind. The book is, as one would expect from a trade paperback, well printed and bound.

Review
Now it s an ology Some say he can swim 72m under ice wearing only trunks and goggles (not too many takers for that one, I d imagine). Others swear he can lie face-down in a tank full of sharks and make a lungful of pure oxygen last just over 20 minutes. All we know is that he s the Stig. In fact Danish freediver Stig Avall Severinsen performed both those feats in the space of a month only last year, and we know this not only because he says so but because the Guinness Book of World Records agrees. Stig has also set three AIDA freediving world records (three for dynamic apnea and one, which he held for a year in 2003/4, for constant weight without fins to 61m). The book based on his experience as a freediver, Breatheology, apparently did well in his native country and is now published in English. Breatheology should certainly help freedivers and perhaps scuba-divers too, but it is aimed at everybody, because Stig believes that good control of our breathing is a way of linking body and mind to achieve a tempting range of health and fitness dividends. The book is very well written, and as a biologist with a PhD in medicine, Stig knows his stuff. At the same time, the reader should be prepared to hand in at the door any cynicism about treating this most natural of human functions as a study course, and any resistance you may have to talk of chakras, prana and third eyes. The ways of yoga do, of course, loom large. This is a self-help book containing theory and exercises. Every so often there is a short testimonial from a follower, which is a little off-putting because it reminds you that respiration is, after all, a business for Stig. But if you wish to breathe more easily or more powerfully this is the book for you. Steve Weinman --DIVER UK June 2011

Those who breathe half, live half , it says on the cover of Stig Avall Severinsen's newly published book "Breatheology The Art of Conscious Breathing". And one is tempted to add: "What's worth doing is worth doing right". Stig's book is an integrated book on a subject that Stig really is an expert on, namely to breathe and hold your breath. We know Stig as a fast-talking freediver, and a man who engages passionately in his interests. He has certainly also been passionate with his new book. One might well have started such a review with the words: "First came the Bible, then the Koran and now "Breatheology". To Stig, breathing is almost like a religion. A good, healthy breathing is good for anything, and the healing powers of breathing are almost unlimited. And this near-religious enthusiasm for breathing is brilliantly reflected in his book. Most of the points and statements are nicely backed by both scientific and practical experience. But it is not the book's greatest force. Its biggest strength is that you can feel Stig's uncompromising enthusiasm for belief in the ability of breathing to generate more energy and other healing properties. You want to join the club and become one of the disciples. You want to become better at using your own breathing. This book is not about freediving, or about accomplishing top performances, nor about holding your breath beyond human limits. This book is about how we all can benefit by focusing on our breath in our daily life. The book is built up on a number of themes. Initially Stig describes how the life of modern man is stressful, and how breathing has become restless and in many cases is not being fully exploited. How good breathing is at reducing stress and creating energy, and how our fast and shallow breathing can have the opposite effect. The book thus begins with the "normality", describing our bad breathing habits in everyday life. Thereafter, the book centers on 5 types of breathing, or perhaps 5 purposes of breathing: trained breathing, sustained breath, powerful breathing, therapeutic breathing and soothing breathing. As a reader, you can easily select the chapters and read them in the sequence you wish. But I recommend that you read the introductory chapters first. The book concludes with a chapter on first aid. It seems a little superficial but ok. After each chapter, Stig describes specific breathing exercises, finely illustrated with excellent drawings and pictures. This exercise catalog is a real force of the book. There are exercises for different purposes ranging from very easy to really difficult. Exercises for everyone. The book is setup nicely with lovely pictures and is printed in a good quality. Of course there are also things that are less good. For example, there is a series of laudatory quotes from happy students who have participated in Stig s courses. Here and there the book's strength, the almost religious belief and enthusiasm, becomes the book's weakness when it gets out of control and becomes too sacred. This happens, for example, when Stig presents recipes for a healthy life. These recipes are as simple as they are right, "eat healthy and exercise" but are sometimes a bit "condescending", not the least when Stig for instance points out that it is important to chew your food slowly, many times and on both sides. We know this the tough part is to get it done. Looking at the book from a sports psychological angle, it is important to emphasize that the book is not a book about performance psychology and mental training. Finally, a simple theme like breathing is material enough for an entire book. the answer is "Yes", for it is not so simple after all. It is both science and religion. --Kristoffer Henriksen (1974) - MD , Sports psychologist and PHD Fellow

Absolutely a must read for the discipline of breath control

Landmark book, wonderful introduction to all matters concerning breath control, free diving and the health and mental benefits thereof. My used copy was actually autographed by the author, Stig, who is also the world record holder in the discipline, so I was doubly happy with purchase!

interesting & inspirational and not just for freedivers
By fred
Breatheology is not just about breathing, but about every aspect of the body and of the environment that can be affected by, or can affect, your breath. In that sense, the scope of the book is HUGE, and it is a real credit to Stig that he has been able to bring so much information together coherently. There are smoothie recipes, stretches, visualizations, stories, philosophy and lots and lots of science, all presented nice and clearly, divided into a series of chapters about breathing such as "yogic breathing", "restless breathing" and so on. The tone of the book is spot-on, just hitting the right balance between a first-person chat and an informal lesson.

Be warned if you are not into Yoga, you may be a little put off by some of the references to chakras etc. but they are nicely evened out with scientific data and the first-hand experiences also included, and most of the references to yoga are contained within one chapter.

All in all, I would recommend this book to almost anyone. There is something here for all walks of life, from athletes to stressed people, and people who are just interested in something like breathing, that is so basic and fundamental to life. The feeling you have when you finish this book is wonder because breathing is something we take so much for granted that actually focusing on it for a while is a truly magical experience. I know a decent amount of physiology about breathing, but this book has really changed my perspective a lot. Highly recommended!

This is Breath Theology
By Darrell Poteet
After having purchased and read several books on the many benefits of proper breathing, I was concerned this one might not be worth the high price tag. That was before I researched the author and his qualifications. He clearly knows what he's talking about and knows how to present his case. Stig advocates a holistic way of living that is centered around breathing and he lays out his philosophy and a completely methodology in this volume.

If you're serious about building a life that can be lived to the fullest, this book should be one of your foundation stones.

The Fear of Islam: An Introduction to Islamophobia in the West, by Todd H. Green

American and European societies, particularly in the long wake of the events of 9/11 and the bombings in Madrid and London, have struggled with the recurrent problem of Islamophobia, which continues to surface in waves of controversial legislative proposals, public anger over the construction of religious edifices, and outbreaks of violence. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine contributes fuel to the aggressive debate in Western societies and creates the need for measured discussion about religion, fear, prejudice, otherness, and residual colonialist attitudes. The Fear of Islam speaks into this context, offering an introduction to the historical roots and contemporary forms of religious anxiety regarding Islam within the Western world. Tracing the medieval legacy of religious polemics and violence, Green weaves together a narrative that orients the reader to the complex history and issues that originate from this legacy, continuing through to the early and late modern colonial enterprises, the theories of "Orientalism," and the production of religious discourses of alterity and the clash of civilizations that proliferated in the era of 9/11 and the war on terror. The book contains analysis of interviews from figures such as Keith Ellison, John Esposito, Ingrid Mattson, Eboo Patel, Tariq Ramadan, and others.

Review

"Todd Green has written a compelling and important book. The future of the West rises and falls on its ability to welcome the contributions of its most diverse elements. Thus, Islamophobia doesn't just hurt Muslims, it weakens Western civilization. Professor Green's book helps us understand the problem and generate creative solutions."—Eboo Patel, Interfaith Youth Core

"Tragically, the ongoing conflicts in many areas of the world seem likely to continue to generate more reports of violence and to reinforce negative attitudes toward Muslims and Islam. Amid this challenge, Green offers a helpful, wide-ranging analysis of major developments together with thoughtful proposals for transforming attitudes and behaviors."—Leo Lefebure, Georgetown University

"This is an extremely important new book. Muslims and Christians together make up well over half of the world's population. Without peace and justice between these two religious communities, there can be no meaningful peace in the world. Our future depends on finding a different way of relating. To this end, the author summarizes encyclopedic information, interprets it clearly, and provides insights that point to a new direction."—Richard Olson, Review & Expositor

"Exceptionally well written, organized and presented, ‘The Fear of Islam: An Introduction to Islamopliobia in the West’ is as informed and informative as it is thoughtful and thought-provoking." --John Burroughs, The Midwest Book Review

"This is an outstanding presentation of the history and current state of Islamophobia. Todd Green draws upon reliable studies supplemented by original research to demonstrate how perceptions of Muslims are shaped and distorted, leading to prejudice and fear. Highly recommended for reporters, teachers, and policy makers." Ingrid Mattson, Huron University College at the University of Western Ontario --Ingrid Mattson, Huron University College at the University of Western Ontario

"Islamophobia is a new name but a very old type of racism. Todd Green traces its roots and its rational and ideological objectives. This is a critical and timely contribution, as it shows the complex historical route used in the West to construct the Other, 'the Muslim,' a production of fear that ends up being a great danger for the West itself. Combating Islamophobia starts with analyzing and understanding its origin: this is what the reader will find in this great book, very well documented." --Tariq Ramadan, University of Oxford, St. Anthony's College

An important book written to overcome one of the most socially acceptable forms of bigotry in the modern era
By Clint Schnekloth
You know there really isn't anything about this book to not like. It's very straightforward and programmatic, but that's needed. It walks the reader through the history of the development of Islamophobia in Western culture, including in-depth analysis of some of the most significant cultural moments of the last century.

Definitions are clear. The book acknowledges consistently that it is explaining Islamophobia to a Western audience. It does not try to speak "for" Muslims, as if one could do that in any sense. It concludes with a set of interviews with major voices for understanding Islam better. This final Q&A, how to overcome Islamophobia, is robust, and a wonderful agenda to follow.

I can hardly believe how helpful this book is. It needs to be read in every religion department of every university.

This book is a must read for anyone wishing to understand one of the most important points of social tension in the world today.
By Scott E. Hendrix
Green is not only an excellent scholar, but he is also a gifted communicator. This book traces the origins of Islamophobic ideas from the middle ages and the period of the Reformation down to the current day, with a special focus on the rhetoric surrounding 9/11 and the period afterwards. It is written for the average educated reader, so Green avoids jargon and does a wonderful job of explaining complex ideas--such as the importance of post-colonial theory for understanding Islamophobic thinking--in a way that is not only clear and understandable but is also utterly compelling and interesting.

Arabic the way Arabs learn it
By Customer
I received this book as a gift to help me refine my learning of the Arabic language, and I love it! This book is a quirky addition to the other Arabic learning books already out there which, let's face it, are often pretty dry. This is probably the first book in English that explains the Arabic language the way that native speakers would learn it, however, this book is not an academic type book. Instead, it is based on applied, practical problems that look easy but can wind up being a real headache, such as how to express "more crowded," "this car is mine," or how to pronounce the number ten correctly. The explanations are written in plain English, and the author translates and explains the concepts and ideas of Arabic grammar terms in a really in-depth and helpful way. This approach is especially helpful if your aim is to study Arabic in the Arab world. The book contains hundreds of examples, and every Arabic sentence is translated and fully vocalized. You will find advanced content that goes beyond what you would learn at a college level. I highly recommend this book for intermediate students!
